As an engineer who both uses hydrogen and can work the math, I'm astonished that no one has corrected Peavey. He mixes units, get equations wrong and just plain can't spell. A decelerating engine is "braking" not "breaking", for example. His thermodynamic computations are often wrong once you work them out, his "borrowing" of other sources is painful where "propane" was not changed to "hydrogen" is all cases in a paragraph. Incredible. This text is very nearly the "Anarchist's Cookbook" of renewable energy -- there's a lot of words, some of it correct, but someone's going to get badly hurt if they actually follow this guide. All that, and a decade out of date to boot. If Amazon would take the book back, I'd gladly send them the ashes from the woodstove.

High Density Information In Plain English

I learned more in five minutes of reading this book than in months of wading through subject indexes in the library (much of the information cannot be found with on-line sources). More people should be made aware of the ideas this book offers in helping solve the world problem of energy. Fuel From Water is what I was looking for and I will put it to good use. Having always been interested in alternate energy sources, and since I am involved in electronics manufacturing, I find the production of electrical energy a fascinating subject. Peavey has done much of the work for me. A friend borrowed the book. He was thrilled to find that much information in one volume. He didn't return it. He just handed me the money to buy another.

what the Hydrogen Revolution is about

This book has been in publication since 1985? That is quite impressive that he started thinking about this stuff way back then. I can't believe all the negative feedback and this book is in it's 11th edition. If there are so many errors and everyone has the time to write about it here don't you think you could send the author a little note? Like "Hey Mikey, photovoltaic cells are made of silicon and implants are made of Silicone." The book is good as a rough start, I'll admit it has been very helpful to me - a professional engineer. Yes the facts and calculations need to be checked but what facts and calculations don't need to be checked? The web sites out there dealing with this stuff are either so simple that a 5 year old could understand or so in-depth that only someone very familiar with the technology could understand the tradeoffs. This book does a great job at bridging those gaps. With that said, good Job Mikey and to everyone else - if you don't like something fix it, or shut up that's what the Hydrogen Revolution is about people fixing something they don't like.

Aktuelle Modedesigner orientieren sich an Nerdklischees und statten ihre Models mit �berdimensionalen Hornbrillen und �hnlichen Kleidungsst�cken aus. W�hrend Nerds fr�her als gesellschaftl-che Randgruppe galten, ist es mittlerweile beinahe schon ein Trend geworden, sich selbst als Nerd zu bezeichnen. Dieser Gesinnungswandel ist in erster Linie ein Produkt unseres hoch technisierten Zeitalters, in dem man ohne grunds�tzliche Computerkenntnisse die Anforderungen des t�glichen Lebens nur noch mit M�he bew�ltigen kann und in dem die Naturwissenschaften eine immer gr��ere Rolle spielen.

Dieser Unterschied wird, wie alle gesellschaftlichen Wandlungen, auch im Fernsehen reflektiert. In den Serien, und besonders in den Sitcoms und Kinderserien der 80er und 90er Jahre wurden Nerds meist als Randfiguren, als „comic relief“, dargestellt. Sie waren selten Sympathietr�ger und noch seltener Hauptfiguren. Meist handelte es sich um �bertriebene, karikaturhafte Figuren wie zum Beispiel Steve Urkel aus Alle unter einem Dach. Es wurde �ber die Nerds gelacht, nicht mit ihnen.

In letzter Zeit hingegen hat sich dies gewandelt. In Serien wie Freaks and Geeks (in Deutschland unter dem Titel Voll daneben, voll im Leben ausgestrahlt) sind Nerds die Hauptcharaktere und auch Identifikationsfiguren f�r den Zuschauer. Eine der beliebtesten Figuren der Serie Heroes war der Nerd und Comic-Fan Hiro Nakamura. Die MTV-Zeichentrickserie Daria war eine der wenigen Sendungen, die einen weiblichen Nerd zur Hauptfigur machte. Auch in Sendungen, in denen dies nicht das prim�re Thema ist, werden des �fteren Themen aus der Nerdkultur behandelt. Mittlerweile hat sich also die Pr�senz von Nerdkultur und Nerds im Fernsehen deutlich gewandelt, insbesondere, da in einer pluralistischen und technologieorientierten Zeit die Abgrenzung zwischen Nerd- und Mainstreamkultur immer schwerer wird.

Diese Arbeit will exemplarisch drei Beispiele der Darstellung von Nerds und Nerdkultur im zeitgen�ssischen Fernsehen untersuchen, die jeweils unterschiedliche Aspekte der Subkultur repr�sentieren: Freizeitgestaltung, Arbeitswelt und m�gliche Gefahren.

A NEW TREATISE FROM ELGAR’S ‘NEW HORIZONS IN ENVIRONMENTAL AND ENERGY LAW’ SERIES

At first glance, the title of this book might seem either confusing or incomprehensible to all but environmentalists or environmental lawyers. What the term ‘emissions trading’ refers to, however, is a ‘market based’ instrument that, in the words of the author, ‘policy makers can use to achieve environmental objectives’.

The most important environmental objective that one can think of is, of course, the reduction of greenhouse gases worldwide. “Emissions trading” is one of several instruments, or systems, if you like, which allows polluters (installations that emit large quantities of greenhouse gases) to ‘trade’ their abatement activities with emitters who, we assume, do not pollute as much.

Therefore, says the author, an associate professor of law at the University of Groningen, ‘the emitter with the lowest abatement costs will sell its abatement efforts in the form of emission allowances to polluters who have higher abatement costs….. it is a cost-effective means of reducing emissions.’

Since the concept of emissions trading was first proposed back in 1968 by a North American scientist, a considerable number of initiatives have been launched worldwide aimed at implementing such systems effectively – all, or most of which, are detailed in this book.

The Kyoto Protocol is probably one of the best known examples, although not embraced by the United States. Nonetheless, it was the US SO2 trading system which, to a large extent, inspired the European Emissions Trading Scheme (the EU ETS). The author then points out that in 2005, the EU ETS started as a multi-jurisdictional attempt to reduce CO2 emissions primarily from four broad sectors: energy, ferrous metals production, minerals and pulp and paper.

The main issue dealt with a thorough and scholarly manner in this book is therefore how to design an emissions trading scheme, including how to identify the possible problems involved … how to address such problems when they arise… and with whom emissions trading systems can be linked. Inevitably the advantages and disadvantages of emissions trading are carefully considered throughout the learned text, as are other key considerations such as design variants and the consequent variety of choice faced by policy makers in deciding which system to implement.

Speaking of which, policy makers in the relevant government bodies will undoubtedly consider this book essential reading, as will environmental lawyers of course, as well as technical consultants advising in this field. With its meticulous footnoting throughout, not to mention the detailed bibliography of over 20 pages, this book certainly emerges as a superb research tool for those seeking to enhance their understanding of this important environmental topic.

About the Author

Henk Tennekes is Director of Research Emeritus at the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute, Emeritus Professor of Meteorology at Free University, Amsterdam, and Emeritus Professor of Aerospace Engineering at Pennsylvania State University. He is the coauthor of A First Course in Turbulence (MIT Press, 1972).

An interesting fly

Agreeable and often gripping reading, this book has popular scientific purposes, keeping strictly scientific in language and showing method: at the start the physical quantities used are defined, then these quantities are put in diagrams to show the relations between them and the author makes these diagrams very telling.
The writing is in general flowing and the communication is forceful but in at least one case it gives rise to some perplexity: ". . . creating a region of reduced pressure on the top surface (a kind of suction), witch pulls the passing air downward." (pg. 5).
In the same paragraph Tennekes rails against the "polite fiction and misapprehension" told by high school teachers to explain the generation of lift. (I am pushed to ask where teachers learn these things?)
The range of arguments touched is very wide: dimensions of wings from insects to big airplanes; long distance migration of several kinds of birds; comparative analysis of energy consumption between birds, cars, trains and jets . . . all explained through the laws of flight introduced in the first chapter. A brief amusing and instructive paragraph is devoted to the stability of a paper airplane.
The amount of figures is very useful for the comprehension and the figures of birds are lovely.
The public target of this book is very wide, and actually the book could be read by everyone, but with some rudiment of physics or with a more deep reading of diagrams you will have more benefit.

One of My Favorite Books

Henk Tennekes writes a concise and accurate introduction to the physics of flight. This edition has more typographical errors than I expected (some words that were spelled correctly in the first edition are misspelled here) but the additional material he added is most welcome. If it weren't for the typos and the slightly lower quality of the paper and binding of the book, I would rate it five stars, as I do and did the first edition.

Important book from important psychoanalyst

When I was in training to become a psychoanalytically-oriented psychologist, I attended meetings of the American Psychoanalytic Association which often featured a main presentation by Greenson. When his book came out (the first of what he intended to be two volumes) on the technique of psychoanalysis, all of us read it and found it profound as well as very enjoyable. We all tried to see little pieces of the analyses he did with Marilyn Monroe (who even lived a while with Greenson and his wife), Frank Sinatra, Vivian Leigh, and others in show business. Each of us had our own ideas of which of Greenson's anecdotes related to these and other people. I highly recommend this book and wish it was not so expensive. I long ago sold my only copy for a pittance and now wish I had it back. I took this book to heart and my own most recent book ("Autobiography of Lee Harvey Oswald")which I edited, contains much that I learned from Greenson and many, many others (including one of his Greenson's analysts--Otto Fenichel). Another of my books "Analyzing Leaders, Presidents and Terrorists" was likewise inspired by such people. As a matter of curiosity, I came across psychoanalysis when my Hungarian uncle attended some of Freud's university classes in Vienna long ago. How valuable that information was!
