Good but with some obvious mistakes

The book is balanced between the early and later years of the band's career, unless other written about bands (like Nicholas Schaffner's A Saucerful Of Secrets, for example, that deal more with early Pink Floyd) yet contains some silly mistakes.

One is the already mentioned about a quarrel in a 1980 gig. In a sentence of the book says it was between frey and Felder but in the next seems to involve Frey and Henley. Another flaw is quotting Don Felder appearing on the Eagles' maiden debut album, when everybody knows he didn't become a member until their third. Next mistake (though apparently unnoticed by most readers of the book) is on the back cover. Marc Shapiro declares the band reunited in 1994 to tour 'the stadiums of the USA'. Petty nationalism or what? THe HFO tour also went overseas so his quote is wrong.

Besides that, the book is enjoyable and well documented, in my humble opinion, though it quottes a lot of the HFO documental. I still find strange that those still in this come-and-go group didn't bother collaborating with Dhapiro and only those who by then were ex members(Meisner and Leadon) did. The central section of the book feature a few pages full of photos of the band mostly in concert that will delight every Eagles fan.

In a nutshell - an interesting but imperfect chornicle of the Eagles' career. I know nobody's perfect but the three mistakes listed above would have been so easy to correct since they're so obvious.

Good summary but some questions do arise.

This book is nice light read on one of the more popular bands from the 1970's. It neatly discusses each members bio and what abilities they brought to the table. You really get a good feel for each members personality.
However, there are a few errors in this brief summary. In the first few pages, there was an incident over playing at a benefit for Senator Cranston. One sentence says it was between Glenn Frey and Don Felder. However, the next sentence says it was Henley. Whereas the subsequent sentences seem to indicate that the argument was between Frey and Felder, it shows that the editing was pretty careless.
Also, Mr. Shapiro states in the intro that he was only able to interview Randy Meisner directly for this book. As you read on, there are plenty of comments from the other members. It seems as if Mr. Shapiro derived his comments from alot of second hand sources. Several of these sources could very well have been taken out of context especially since Mr. Shapiro casually acknowledges these references at the beginning.
Finally, Mr. Shapiro glosses over Glenn Frey's solo career too quickly. Whereas Glenn's solo work was not as strong as Don Henley's, he did have a few top selling singles such as The Heat Is On, You Belong To The City, and Smugglers Blues. What about his acting roles in Miami Vice? This is hardly mentioned.
None the less the discussion about the antimosity within the band and the sluggish pace of the recording sessions were presented very well. One can really get a feel that it is not easy being in a rock n roll band. In general, this book does its job.

Hmmmmm

Being an avid Eagles fan I have over the years picked up just about everything available that allows me to learn a little more of the guys whose music I cherish. When I purchase a book I would expect it to be well researched and perhaps contain information gleaned from the Horse`s mouth. This book seems to have been written after the author watched Hell Freezes Over as he quotes liberally from a video which and correct me if I`m mistaken, virtually every Eagles fan has seen multiple times!?! Other quotes, stories and ditties are common knowledge to Eagles fans, or available by reading web sites, articles, etc. Therefore whilst mildly enjoyable, the nature of the material renders this publication superfluous unless you are only mildly interested in the Eagles. I believe a better read is the Marc Eliot, "To the Limit" slightly more sensational and some people say inaccurate, but better than The Long Run by some.

Helpful overview, but becomes a bit redundant.

I spent the bucks hoping for some valuable tips, and there are several throughout. Bear in mind, though, as the author clearly states in her introduction, that her experiences and legal citations are from Australia. And while similar citations of US law and cases may exist, they are not provided here. This is a good primer, but I would only recommend it to US readers at a lower price. That said, the market is wide open for a US edition.

About the Author

NEIL RACKHAM is founder and former president of Huthwaite, Inc. Huthwaite researches, consults, and provides seminars for over 200 leading sales organizations around the world, including Xerox, IBM, and Citicorp. His academic background is in research psychology. It was at the University of Sheffield, England, that he began his research into sales effectiveness that resulted in SPIN. Mr. Rackham is the author of more than 50 articles and several books.

Great insight into how people think during conversations

With this in mind, I wanted to improve my ability to sell. In my role as a Tech Evangelist, I don't actually have anything to sell in exchange for currency, but instead, I am always selling my brand. I came across Neil Rackham's 1988 book, SPIN Selling, which is the end result of 5+ years of research and listening in on thousands of sales calls.

The big isn't about the "hit-and-run" approach, but instead covers how to build genuine relationships and solve the problems your customers or community face. I find that I remember books in great detail if I mark them up as I go. That means I use dozens of stickies, have a highlighter in one hand, and a pen in the other, so that I can mark up the book.What you see below are all of the notes I wrote in the margin, or at the end of each chapter. I've transcribed it to my website so that others could benefit from it too.

Chapter 1 - Sales Behavior and Sales Success
When a buyer hears a good pitch, they will remember it temporarily. When they hear a great pitch, they'll remember it forever.There are 4 stages of sales:
1. Preliminaries
2. Investigation
a. You should list arguments which show how their problem is big
3. Demonstrate Capability
4. Obtain Commitment

Value
• Small Sales
○ Buyers are less aware of it
• Large sales
○ You must build your perceived value

Small Sales
There are things which may work in small sales, but will not work in large deals. For example:
• Opening
○ Offer product benefits
○ Appeal to the buyer's personal interests
• Give Benefits
• On Dealing with Rejection Handling
○ Clarifying the objection
○ Rewording the objection

Chapter 2 - Obtaining Commitment: Closing the Sale
What is closing?
Putting a person into some kind of commitment.
In small sales:Closing is strongly related to success, you should use many types, and close frequently during a call.
These are ineffective in/when:
• Large sales
• When a customer is sophisticated
• There is a post-sale relationship

There are four types of closing techniques

1) Adaptive
a. "Where would you like it delivered?"
2) Alternative
a. "Prefer Monday or Tuesday for delivery?"
3) Standing Room Only
a. "Buy now or I have to offer it to someone else…."
4) Order-Blank
a. Fill out the order form before the buyer even commits

The bigger the decisions, the more negative a buyer reactors to pressure during a sale. Instead of pushing a closing technique, have a goal to achieve one of these forms of success:

In large sales, there are three (3) forms of success:

1) Order:
a. Commitment to buy
2) Advance:
a. Move forward toward a decision
3) Continuation:
a. The conversation will continue at a later date, but with no specific action taken

Chapter 3 - Customer Needs in the major sale
As a sale becomes larger:
• Needs take longer to develop
• Commitments are likely to involve elements, inputs, and influences from several people.
• Needs are more likely to be expression on a rational basis
• There are more serious consequences for the buyer if things go bad with the purchase

What is a need?
Made by the buyer, which expresses a want or concern that can be satisfied by the seller

What is a want?
Personal emotional appeal

Needs start with minor imperfections. They evolve into clear problems, difficulties, or dissatisfactions.

There are two different kinds of needs:

1) Implied
a. Same definition as above
b. The number of needs are not important, but what you do with them is
2) Explicit
a. Specific customer statements of wants or desires
b. These are most important

The takeawayYour questioning should unveil what the customer's implied needs are, which then lead to explicit needs. Those are what is important.

Chapter 4 - The SPIN strategy
Situation Questions
• Part of most sales cycles
• Not linked to success
• Too many Qs? Buyers get bored

Problem Questions (good)
• Better than situational Qs
• Not linked to success

Some cultures are not comfortable with sellers probing into their problems. Ex: Japan

Implicit Questions (better)
• Build a customer's perception of value
• Are the language of the decision maker
• Weakness:
○ They make customers more uncomfortable with the problem. They feel negative and sad
Need / Payoff Questions (best)
• About the value or usefulness of a solution
• They focus the customer's attention on the solution
• Gets the customer telling you about the benefits
• These create a positive effect
• They also allow someone to become an internal cheerleader for you / your product

How to use SPIN questions
• Come up with potential problems the customer may face before the call
• Come up with questions to uncover those problems

Chapter 5 - Giving Benefits in Major Sales
Features
• Facts, data, or info about the product
• Unpersuasive
• Don't help or harm a sale
• Users respond more positively than buyers
• By listing features, buyers come to expect a higher price!

Benefits
• Show how a feature can help
• Much more powerful than features

There are two types of benefits:Type A:
Can help the customer - useful in small sales

Type B:
Fulfill an explicit need - useful in large sales

Demonstrating capabilities
• Don't demonstrate too early in the call
• Beware of just listing advantages of your product
• Instead, illustrate what problem your solution solves

Chapter 6 - Preventing Objections
Everyone will receive rejections. Skilled sellers receive fewer though, because they know objection prevention, not how to handle rejection.

Most objections are to your solutions that don't fit a need of the customer. If a customer has an objection about the value of your product, that means you are not developing a strong enough understanding of a customer's needs.

Chapter 7 - Preliminaries: Opening the Call
Early stages of a meeting
Ever forget someone's name, immediately after meeting them? That's because we are overwhelmed with information when we meet someone new. Be sure not to overload them with even more info.

Conventional Openings
These are OK in small sales, but will have limited success in larger sales
1) Relate to a buyer's personal interest
a. People become suspicious of you when you do this!
2) Make an opening benefit statement about the product
a. You can get trapped!
i. Don't demonstrate benefits / capabilities too early in the call
ii. You don't get to ask any questions and investigate the customer's problem!

What works?
Focus on the objective, which is to get consent to move on to the investigation stage
• Get down to business quickly
• Avoid offering solutions too soon
• Concentrate on asking questions

After the call
Did you complete your objective?
What would you change?
What did you learn that could benefit future calls w/ the customer?
What did you learn that could benefit future calls w/ other customers?

Chapter 8 - Turning Theory into Practice
Keys to learning
1) Practice 1 behavior at a time
2) Do it 3x
3) Quantity before quality
a. Focus on just doing something, and not on perfecting it
4) Practice in safe / comfortable situations

Creating a needs-payoff question with the customer
You should ask them:

• How do you think our solution could help you?
• What do you see as the plusses of this approach?

This way they feel as though they came up with the solution, and they become internal cheerleaders for you and remember the benefits of your product.

Not bad for dull subject matter

Personally, I thought this book could have been condensed down quite a bit (I found the graphics to be nearly useless). However, it did help me to recognize, consolidate, and understand much of what I have picked up on my own over the last few years.
In addition, I found myself in agreement with most of what the author had to say which helped to build my confidence level. The book contains many useful examples which highlight the author's methods. The most interesting portions of the book are the author's disproval of the effectiveness of some well-known sales techniques when used in large accounts. Overall, I would recommend this book to anyone who makes his living in sales. You are almost certainly going to pick up something useful.
I also agree with the reviewer below with regard to the title of this book. Perhaps the author should venture into marketing as his next area of research.

Absolute must read

intially the Name "Spin Selling" came across to be as some cheesy and manipulative model being taught by the author.
after reading various books and attending seminars and workshops i was consistently referred to this book.
also i researched some of the high-performance Sales Professionals and most of them had training on SPIN Selling, so
i finally decided to read Rackham's book "SPIN Selling" and
i'm glad i did and yes this book i feel is the Foundation of all the Modern Sales Training out there.
His Training is backed with extensive proof and facts and every single advice is backed by extensive research conducted by huthwaite. very impressed.
"Situation - Problem - Implication and Need-Payoff", these are the four types of Questioning you will learn and the Value and relative importance of each and in what order to be used effectively.
the biggest lesson for me is the Difference of a "Implied Need" compared to "Explicit Need" and how it all boils down to uncovering "Explicit Needs" and to communicate with customers about "Benefits". this book also clears a very common mistake a lot of us do, to look at a product or solution's advantages and convey that as Benefit to customer. As per the author a "Benefit" is one that solves a Customer's "Explicit Need".
don't be discouraged by any review that writes off the book's style of writing to be research oriented, the book is around 190 Pages and it's worth the weight in gold.

Brilliant Gut-Wrenching Debut

The first thing I want to start with is a trigger warning. This book contains vivid depictions of sexual assault, pedophilia, and rape. If any of these are triggering for you, this book will be difficult for you to read. It is a truly beautiful, brilliant book but it was very emotionally draining and difficult to read.
I first heard about Pointe a few months ago and my interest was piqued because of the backdrop of ballet, but my first impression was that there were so many things for the author to juggle. It seemed impossible for me that Theo’s life could be presented in a natural way. I was wrong. Though hers was a quiet voice, after a bit of reading, Theo’s voice settled over me and I became fully engaged with her story.
The setting of Pointe reminded me so much of my own upbringing, in suburban Chicago in a mostly white neighborhood. There was one vivid recollection of Theo in middle school during a lesson on the Civil Rights Movement where the teacher singled Theo out because she was black. I’ve never felt so connected with a setting in a book before, especially as Theo would take the train into the city (as I did all throughout high school). It was just very well done for me.
The reading experience of Pointe was similar to my first time reading Wintergirls, because although I love both books and would absolutely recommend them, they were difficult reads. With Pointe I made the decision to finish it within two days because it wasn’t an experience I wanted to draw out. There were beautiful scenes in this book, but also scenes that made me shake with sorrow and anger. What Pointe executes perfectly is making the reader truly understand how and why victims can blame themselves and be so groomed by a predator.
My only negative thing to say is that the climax of the novel - which I won’t spoil, but I’ll just say involves Theo revealing what happened to her on a grand scale - did a fade out. I wanted to be in that scene and experience it, as gut wrenching as I know it would have been. And I always have this desire, but I would have enjoyed spending more time in Theo's recovery, because ending so abruptly seems too neat for all the things Theo was dealing with. I also wish the author would have mined exactly why Theo and Hosea’s relationship was so problematic (especially by connecting it to Theo’s childhood experiences).

Okay, so this book was definitely a book I had to sit down and digest for a while, something that I had to sit back and say what did I just read? The story was amazing though; gut wrenching and gritty at times but something that is very realistic. Pointe follows Theo who has overcome heartbreak, an eating disorder, and her best friend being abducted, but when her best friend (Donavon) returns very dark memories being to resurface.

So we’ve got Theo who is working hard at taking her ballet career to a professional level and getting her life back on track. When Theo was thirteen she had a boyfriend that had left her without any warning and just disappeared, after her boyfriend disappeared she went into a depression. Around the same time her boyfriend left her best friend was abducted and everything began to spiral down and Theo winds up with a severe eating disorder. Now that four years have passed and Theo is doing better, eating better, dating semi-better guys, and then everything changes. This book is filled with gut wrenching and heart breaking scenarios that Theo has to overcome and at 17 years old that can be tough. Theo is a character I absolutely loved reading about, she was real, I could feel her through the pages, and though there were times I wanted to shaker her, I wouldn’t want her any other way. She was a real teen going through some really rough stuff for her age and she had her faults, her strengths and she was just someone that was completely relatable and got you completely enthralled in her story.

I would most definitely recommend this book, it was a beautiful story with real gritty truth to it, but I would have to say to keep the audience to a mature young adult, some content could be graphic. - Shannon (US)

Brandy Colbert has penned an emotional and gripping coming-of-age story about a girl searching for grace amid harrowing shadows. Theo is a ballerina who pushes herself to the limits, striving for perfection, but yearning for escape from the strictures she imposes on herself. This is an inspiring story of someone trying to get up on her own two feet, rising on their tips to stand higher than she thought possible ... if only she could stop tripping herself up.

Theo is drawn as much to chaos as control. While working tirelessly to prove herself worthy of a future in ballet, she struggles with an eating disorder and is tempted by the usual teenage exploration of drugs and sex, embarking on a covert relationship with Hosea, her rehearsal pianist and the boyfriend of a close friend. The original printing of Testing Computer Software set the standard for the emerging field of test engineering with a full tour of the state of the art in managing the testing process. The reissued text makes this classic out-of-print text available once again. Though it relies heavily on older examples (including MS-DOS) and has not been updated, this text is still a worthwhile resource for practical-minded advice on the realities of testing.

The best thing about Testing Computer Software is its practical point-by-point guide to everyday software testing, from creating a test plan, to writing effective bug reports, to working with programming staff and management to fix bugs.

That said, this book's early frame of reference shows how far we've come. (The book relies heavily on MS-DOS examples and features some truly embarrassing anachronisms, including the mention of testing dot-matrix printers and even EGA/VGA video modes.) The bibliography stops at sources from 1992 and features many references from the 1980s. Nowadays, automated software testing tools are the staple of any testing strategy. This book even advocates a wait-and-see approach to the "new" Microsoft Test.

These limitations aside, there is still a good deal to mine here. Much of the approach to testing is still very valid for any aspiring or working test engineer. Clearly, readers of the first edition will have little reason to upgrade to this second edition, but for anyone who appreciates a "classic" (and indeed a pioneering) text in the field of software testing, it's good to have Testing Computer Software in print again. --Richard Dragan

Excellent orientation for new test professionals

When I first read this book over eight years ago I was less than enthusiastic. At the time I felt that the approach was not rigorous enough. Over time I came to appreciate the pragmatism and how the approach in this book reflects the realities of software testing instead of a rigid, purist view as an unattainable ideal.
Everything the new or intermediate test professional needs to know is covered. The practices and techniques provided will foster sound QA practices and will step you through developing test strategies, and from those, developing and executing test cases. These are the real essence of testing, and this book covers them exceptionally well.
I like the coverage of testing systems and artifacts that are not software - documentation, hardware, and localization testing advice shows that testing is not limited to software. As importantly, the chapter on legal consequences of software defects will show testing in a perspective that is often overlooked, even by seasoned test professionals.
If you are new to software testing, or have some experience, but no formal training, this book will provide you with the right way to approach software testing, and will give insights that would take years to learn on your own.

I am a CCNA, CCDA, MCSE, MCP, Network+, etc. certified person who is currently persuing a career in Exploratory Testing testing printers at HP.
This book was recommended to me by my test lead from Satisfice.
It presents very useful information in a refreshing style that allows you to apply it to your testing immediatly.
