GREAT learning to read books and affordable
By LJO
I have been looking for some reading books that my 5 year old can read. These are working great. A new word is introduced on each page, building up to four words by the end of the booklet. The picture clearly illustrates the word, so she is able to either guess or have an idea of what the word is if she needs help sounding it out. The back of the book lets him work on printing while reviewing what what in the book. I find word families have been easier to introduce than sight words. Great first books for a beginner reader!
Pages are perforated, all you need to do is cut in half, fold and staple.

Great set of books!

I really love this mini book set
By Lindsey hodgman
I really love this mini book set! My Daughter is in Kindergarten and while she is doing good with reading she has trouble with rhyming. This product is really helping her out with that. She really enjoys doing the mini workbooks, it is much more fun than the monotonous way of trying to help her with rhyming which she dreads and complains about. I love that these also help her with her writing and her sight words. She loves to be able to help put the "books" together. It was a bit challenging figuring out the sequences they needed to go in but after figuring that out putting them together was seamless. I am planning on buying one for my son as well to get him started early and give him a head start on things. I am hoping he enjoys it just as much as my daughter does!

Great for intervention and summer practice at home
By Natalie Schmidt
I purchased this book to use at home with my son over the summer to review and work on skills learned in school this previous year. I really like how the book is laid out. The introduction to the book explains how to make the books, how to use them, and even other activities to extend the learning so parents who don't have an educational background can help their student. Each mini book is the front and back of one page and can either be copied for use later or torn out easily with the tear out pages and then used. Each mini book has pictures where the student can use the word family to make a new word for better understanding. After the word work then the student can see the word in print in The mini story.

As you can see in my picture, the books are not in color like the cover photo suggests. My son however enjoyed coloring the pictures while we talked about the story and it kept him actively engaged.

Climbing the Mountain: The Scientific Biography of Julian Schwinger, by Jagdish Mehra, Kimball A. Milton

Julian Schwinger was one of the leading theoretical physicists of the twentieth century. His contributions are as important, and as pervasive, as those of Richard Feynman, with whom (and with Sin-itiro Tomonaga) he shared the 1965 Nobel Prize for Physics. Yet, while Feynman is universally recognized as a cultural icon, Schwinger is little known even to many within the physics community. In his youth, Julian Schwinger was a nuclear physicist, turning to classical electrodynamics after World War II. In the years after the war, he was the first to renormalize quantum electrodynamics. Subsequently, he presented the most complete formulation of quantum field theory and laid the foundations for the electroweak synthesis of Glashow, Weinberg, and Salam, and he made fundamental contributions to the theory of nuclear magnetic resonance, to many-body theory, and to quantum optics. He developed a unique approach to quantum mechanics, measurement algebra, and a general quantum action principle. His discoveries include 'Feynman's' parameters and 'Glauber's' coherent states; in later years he also developed an alternative to operator field theory which he called Source Theory, reflecting his profound phenomenological bent. His late work on the Thomas-Fermi model of atoms and on the Casimir effect continues to be an inspiration to a new generation of physicists. This biography describes the many strands of his research life, while tracing the personal life of this private and gentle genius.

Review
"Mehra and Milton provide a great deal of material from interviews and archival files and thus help give us a fuller picture of Schwinger. Perhaps their most important contribution is their account of the evolution of many of Schwinger's thoughts. [...] It does shed light on a many-faceted genius."

About the Author
Jagdish Mehra has been University Distinguished Professor of Sciences and Humanities at the University of Houston, Texas for many years and also served as U.N.E.S.C.O.-Sir Julian Huxley Distinguished Professor of Physics and The History of Science at Trieste and Paris. He has published extensively on the historical and conceptual development of modern physics and is the acclaimed biographer of 'The Beat of a Different Drum: The Life and Science of Richard Feynman'. From Spring 1959 until Schwinger's death, Mehra remained his close friend. Kimball A. Milton is Professor of Physics at the University of Oklahoma, where he leads the theoretical high-energy physics group. He has numerous publications in the field of quantum field theory. He was a student of Julian Schwinger at Harvard and was his postdoctorate associate at U.C.L.A. for nearly a decade.

The forgotten genius
By Rodney A. Brooks
This book should be required reading for every physicist and every physics student. While the technical material can be tough going, it can be skipped over, and there is much personal history to interest the lay reader. Schwinger's accomplishments were not just comparable to Feynman's; they were much greater. Only by reading this book can one appreciate all that he did, including anticipating electroweak unification, introducing the Higgs mechanism, and proving the spin-statistics theorem. Most importantly, he perfected Quantum Field Theory (his third trip "up the mountain"). The tragedy is that, like most of Schwinger's work, QFT has been abandoned and forgotten - at least in its true meaning of a world made of fields - leaving the world to drown in a sea of chaos caused by the particle picture. As I show in my book for the lay reader [ASIN:0473179768 Fields of Color: The theory that escaped Einstein], which is dedicated in part to the memory of Julian Schwinger, only QFT can resolve the paradoxes of relativity and quantum mechanics that arise from the particle view.

Great Book!
By Boson18
This book was sick. A really really good look into one of the greatest minds. Just about as much physics as there is history in it so the average physicist will have a ball reading it. I personally loved the perspective that it gave with how physics is approached from within the theoretical community. It really gave humanity to some of the heavy weights of the 20th century; with how the ideas were developed, how personal issues effected the outcomes of certain events, and how Julian Schwinger took on the monumental task (alone and in the middle of the night) one of man kinds greatest achievements of mankind: the formulation and execution of QED.

Steel Trapp: The Academy, by Ridley Pearson

Steven "Steel" Trapp has been placed in an East Coast boarding school for gifted kids by his FBI agent father. He soon discovers that there's a clubby element of the faculty and upper classmen that is very secretive and protective. To his surprise, his friend Kaleigh arrives to board at the school, and it isn't long before the two realize that this is not your normal boarding school.

It seems a select few students are recruited, while still minors, to serve as special "translators" for the US Government. People - including diplomats and dignitaries - will say things around kids that they wouldn't otherwise dare speak outside of embassies. The willing student "agent" takes a semester abroad and ends up spying for his country.

But there are dark elements at play at the school. Foreign agents may have penetrated the school's secrecy and may have sleepers in place: kids spying on future kid spies. And there is conspiracy and competition among the elite faculty that threatens security.

As Steel and Kaleigh are recruited for their first test run - trying to break a ring of pickpockets in a Boston hotel - things go impossibly wrong. Betrayal and conspiracy cloud what should have been a straightforward assignment. And all too soon, their very lives are in danger.

A sequel better than the first.
By Amazon Customer
I have been reading Ridley Pearson books since Dead Aim written under the pseudonym Wendell McCall.
This book is more like his "adult" books than the first one. Pearson added more descriptive details without "boring" the reader - instead it pulls you deeper into the story.
At the end of the 1st book you think Kaileigh and Steel MUST meet again, but wonder how. Then at Wynncliff he spots red hair that - yes! - it's her.
Of course they have to have an adventure and draw new friends into the ride. The other reviews speak to some of the action. I just want to let you know that this book is a great blend of adventure and literature. I can't wait for more.
Be sure to read the other Youth orieanted books - the Kingdon Keepers, the Peter books with Dave Barry, and the Science Project.

The Academy
By Michigander Pat
The newest of the Steel Trapp Series, "The Academy", is exciting and wonderfully written. This series is in the genre of Hardy Boys or Nancy Drew when I was growing up and very appealing to all ages (I read before passing them on to the younger set). My Grandchildren loved both the first and now this newest in the series. Being a Ridley fan, I am proud to say we now have three generations of family reading his novels.

This exciting series promises many amazing adventures for all involved
By KidsReads
Steven Trapp's photographic memory earned him the nickname of Steel because anything and everything he sees gets locked down in his brain like a steel trap. And while his talent comes in handy when trying to impress teachers or distract his mom, he doesn't feel it's enough to make him intelligent. But that's where Steel is wrong because he is incredibly smart --- ingenious even --- and definitely brainy enough to have competed in the National Science Challenge held in Washington, D.C. last year. That's where he met his new friend, Kaileigh, and where they somehow landed in a life and death international espionage adventure with the FBI.

Someone has taken notice of Steel and Kaileigh, inviting both of them to enroll at Wynncliff Academy, an exclusive east coast boarding school. Steel promises his parents he'll give it a chance --- at least until Thanksgiving --- and settles into the rigid routine of the demanding school. He doesn't have much trouble with the studies part of the program; like always, he reads something once and it's committed to memory. But the food definitely isn't worth writing home about. Steel was also hoping to keep his amazing memory to himself, knowing it jams a barrier between him and others, especially when he's trying to make friends. However, this is not something he can keep a secret. And soon he is asked to try out for a fast-paced Wynncliff team sport called ga-ga, in which his unique memory aids in his ability to play.

Despite his busy schedule, Steel can't help but notice some strange stuff sneaking around the academy. It doesn't take him and Kaileigh long to uncover secret passageways, mysterious meetings and the fact that every student seems to possess a unique talent or ability; it's as if they are being recruited, like a special task force in the military. And then Steel digs too deep, falling head over heels into the heart of the academy --- where students are trained to be real spies. And Wynncliff has a special assignment just for Steel and Kaileigh.

STEEL TRAPP: THE ACADEMY is an action-packed thrill ride, filled with surprise twists, unexpected turns and nonstop excitement. Steel is a very likable individual whom readers would like to call a friend. Other characters are distinct and dynamic, each adding just the right ingredients to form balanced roles. Ridley Pearson has a unique talent for description, involving all of the senses and bringing the scenery alive in an exciting way that boosts the action instead of slowing it down:

"A chilly mist hovered above the soccer field like a veil of gauze, masking any view of the gymnasium and natatorium beyond. A murder of crows flew in and out of the smoky layers, their caws piercing the still, mud-scented morning air and echoing off the dormitory's ivy-covered brick walls. As Steel crossed the adjacent field, the mist swirled around him, looking sometimes like long fingers attempting to grab him, or animal faces, or, at last, like a gray stone archway leading directly to the ga-ga pit and the silhouetted figure that awaited him there."

Intertwined with Steel's tale is a parallel story about a group of homeless teens and the woman who leads them in hotel heists. Both stories accelerate and expand before crashing into one another in the final chapters. This exciting series promises many amazing adventures for all involved, and I can't wait for the third installment.
