stat mech for intro physics

In 2007 I used this book as a required supplement for the third semester of our intro physics sequence. I assigned it because of the skimpy coverage of thermodynamics/statmech in the typical intro books (which I think aim to shoehorn intro physics into 2 semesters). I believe that since thermodynamics is central and applicable (more so than, say, Newtonian mechanics), it deserves an enlarged fraction of class time made possible by a three semester sequence. I like the book's approach of actual enumeration (using a supplied computer program) of allowed states in a model system. I'm not sure I would be happy with this book as a stand-alone textbook, as I like to see more chapter-end problems than it supplies. I would use again for my class.

Live To Read

Meaney wrote a book that had me laughing from cover to cover. The plot focuses on the effects of a "boy recession" at a high school. When 12% of the boys leave the school, the remaining guys find that they are now in high demand. Boys who never played a sport before are on the football team and guys who could never hope for a date find that they are surrounded by desperate girls. This book is told from two perspectives, the first is Hunter. At first, he is unaffected by the exodus of the guys from his school. Hunter is a brilliant slacker who doesn't put much effort into anything he does. This changes after being yelled at by a high school advisor and meeting Kelly, the second narrator of this book. Kelly is sweet, nice, and musically gifted. She finds herself drawn to Hunter, she likes his easy-going personality. As the two grow closer, the problems that come with a boy recession begin to interfere with their friendship.
The Boy Recession is perfect for young adult and teenage readers. Meaney's writing is humorous and creative. All the characters stand out and are memorable. I can't wait to read Meaney's next book and I give this novel five out of five stars.

Not for younger readers

I am writing astute parent of a middle school age girl. I was pre-reading before giving offering this book to my daughter; I did not get past chapter 4. By that point, I had encountered enough uses of the "f" word, references to pot smoking and masturbation, that I decided this book would have to wait a few years. The premise is interesting, but the writing is uninspired. Read at your own risk!

SO funny and entertaining!

First Impressions: I really liked Bloodthirsty by Flynn Meaney, so when I realized that The Boy Recession was written by her I was stoked! This book just sounded like such a fun read, plain and simple. I like how the cover art reflects what the book is about in a very creative way.

First 50 Pages: This isn't a terribly long book and I read it in its entirety in just a couple of hours. It would be perfect for someone who is trying to squeeze in a book or two before going back to school (which is why I decided to read it when I did) because it's so short and so enjoyable. There isn't really anything deep or heavy about The Boy Recession. From the beginning to the end, it's just a lot of fluff and the humor is awesome. I laughed so many times while reading this story. It's the kind of book that you want to pick up if you are feeling down because you won't be able to stop laughing. I thought that the author did a really nice job setting her scenes and giving each of her characters distinct voices.

Characters & Plot: The book synopsis that was provided by the publisher basically gives away most of the plot. The story follows Kelly and Hunter who each give their own perspective of the literal boy recession that is occurring at their high school. The points of view from each character are really well done and they seemed to go well together. Sometimes when you have more than one point of view in books the writing seems choppy, but that wasn't the case here. Kelly and Hunter are friends, but I believe they were both secretly (and maybe unknowingly) attracted to each other before the shortage of boys hit their school.

The girls that go to their school are going bonkers and the recession brings out the worst in most of them. The book is full of drama llamas and silly high school chit-chat, bitchy teenagers, and girls that would do just about everything to make sure they have dates to prom. Of course, the guys love this; even the lesser known guys are getting a ton of attention. It's like every teenage boy's dream, to have a bunch of girls fighting over them.

Except Hunter. He is a low-key sort of dude and prefers to hang out under the radar. He's a stereotypical slacker type that doesn't have a lot of drive. When the recession hits, the girls start to take notice of him and he is considered one of the more appealing slacker kids.

Kelly is just your average teenage girl. She isn't popular, but she isn't a loner type either. She is Hunter's friend, but she begins to realize that she has feelings for Hunter. The only problem? She has to compete with a zillion other girls who think they are into Hunter as well.

Of course, Kelly and Hunter form a relationship (finally) and it is really sweet and cute. Their relationship is very simple and it's not overly done. Like the rest of the novel, it's all fluff and fun. It's romantic and very cheesy, just the way I like it!

Final Thoughts: This is a wonderful book to kick back with and relax. It's totally cheesy, but cheesy can be awesome! If you ever wondered what it would be like if boys suddenly became a hot commodity, then this is the book for you. I definitely think that The Boy Recession is going to appeal to girls between the ages of 14-17 and maybe a little older. Most of the time I think that many YA titles have cross-over appeal, but I'm not too sure about this one. So if you are older, you might want to skip this one over.

NOT THE FULL TEXT!

I downloaded this free version of GT so that my Kindle would read it to me on a recent road trip. I'm teaching a college-level class and included the whole text of GT and didn't want to waste time while I was driving 14 hours when I could be reading/lesson preparing for my class. ALAS, this version is CENSORED and only HALF of the book! I am so disappointed that this isn't advertised anywhere. This Kindle edition includes Part I (Lilliput) and Part II (Brobdingnag) ONLY. It is missing Part III (Laputa &c.) and Part IV (Land of Houyhnhynms). Unbelievable. The censorship is ridiculous, too. Beware, you're getting the child-proof version of this classic.

I read the Illustrated Classics version as a kid and when I was in my mid-teens, I read the full version. To this day, I am still enjoying both versions; which one I read depends on my mood and how I feel.
The author uses great metaphors, like storms, to transition between different islands. Each change in setting teaches many important lessons without the reader really realizing it. How the author does this is a mystery and keeps the reader hooked,, wanting to know what will happen next snd if the characters will ever retturn home. You also wonder how things will change for thr main character if their journey does end and what the long lasting effects will be. Not just on that person, but those around them and where they live.
This is an interesting, intriguing, edge of your seat book that you don't want to miss!

By rating this book with one star and designating the "author's writing" as "poor" I am slamming THIS PARTICULAR EDITION, and not the brilliant satirical work authored by Jonathon Swift. This edition consists of only the first two parts of Gulliver's Travels, and, at least according to one reviewer, it has been unnecessarily bowdlerized.

The Kindle Book was free, so I guess it was worth every penny. It is disturbing that people would form an unfavorable opinion of the book because of the editing, though. And nowhere does Amazon or Kindle warn the reader that the original book has been desecrated in this manner.

About the Author
Friedrich Nietzsche was born near Leipzig in 1844. When he was only twenty-four he was appointed to the chair of classical philology at Basel University. About the Author
Rich West is a past President of the National Communication Association. He is also Professor in the Department of Communication Studies at Emerson College in Boston. At Emerson, he has served as the Department Chair for several years, as the Acting Director of the Institute for Liberal Arts and Interdisciplinary Studies, and as the Project Director of the Center for Innovation in Teaching and Learning. He is past President of the Eastern Communication Association, where he received the Past Officer's Award and was recognized as a "Distinguished Research Fellow" in the Association. Rich is also the former Director of NCA's Educational Policies Board.

Both Illinois State University (B.A./M.A.) and Ohio University (Ph.D.) have recognized him as an Outstanding Alum in Communication Studies. Rich's research has appeared in Communication Education, Communication Studies, Communication Quarterly, Day Care and Early Education, Communication Reports, Journal of Family Communication, among other diverse outlets. He has written extensively in the area of classroom communication and has been recognized as a "Leading Scholar" in Classroom Communication by the Communication Institute for Online Scholarship (CIOS). Rich's principle co-author is Lynn Turner. Together with Lynn, he has co-authored 5 books in multiple editions. He is also co-editor of The Family Communication Sourcebook and the co-editor of the Sage Handbook of Family Communication. In 2014, NCA’s Family Communication Division recognized the Sourcebook as its Outstanding Book Award. In addition, Rich has (co) authored dozens of articles and book chapters and is a current member of numerous journal editorial boards. Rich's research has been featured in a number of media outlets including USA Today, Christian Science Monitor, NPR, Toronto Globe & Mail, CNN International, Austin Statesman (TX), among others. When he has some free time, he enjoys working on his 105 year-old summer home in Maine, but privately admits that he would rather hire people than do the work himself!

Lynn H. Turner teaches in the College of Communication at Marquette University.  She received her Ph.D. from Northwestern University in 1989.  She is the author of several journal articles, books, and book chapters focused on communication studies.  She is the recipient of the Marquette University College of Communication Research Award (1998), the Organization for the Study of Communication, Language, and Gender’s Outstanding Book Award (1997) and Outstanding Article Award (2000).  She is guest editor (with Richard West) for a special issue of the Journal of Family Communication and she serves on the editorial board of several communication journals.  She is the Vice-President of Central States Communication Association and Past-President of the Family Division of the National Communication Association.  Her current research interests include family communication, gendered communication, and communication and relationships.

Alexander Rauser has a strong fifteen-year creative, digital media, and technology background spanning online and offline channels. Working with companies ranging from multinationals to small businesses as they implement strategic digital solutions, he has redesigned a large number of enterprise systems from user experience and technical perspectives.

After working for several creative agencies in Germany and leading the design and digital operations for a German record label, Rauser ventured to the UAE in 2005 to build his international client portfolio.

In 2010, he founded the strategic digital agency Prototype Interactive. And with his expertise and immense knowledge of the digital industry, Rauser has positioned Prototype as a leading interactive agency specializing in digital strategies for medium-to-large enterprises.

Small book but worth the money

With his hand-on experience, the author clearly explains on how companies create, implement, maintain and innovate the organization’s digital strategy.I’ve learned two things from this book.The first thing is general information on digital strategy described in the “Introduction” and Chapter 1”.The second thing is detailed information on digital strategy described in “Chapter2 to Chapter 7”.
In the “Introduction” the author describes the story of technologies from the past, present and future with some examples. The author has found out that the process of digital transformation is sometimes mistaken for a one-time process to achieve digital excellence. He therefore emphasizes that digital transformation is ongoing process which requires continuous improvement over time. The author also touches on “digital investment” which many companies heavily invested in hardware and software but fail to deliver the expected results in the end. I agree with him on this point.
In chapter 1, the author proposes the definition of Digital Strategy. Some components such as process, collecting information, planning, identifying risks and opportunities, maintenance, and creating sub strategies are also included as parts of digital strategy. The author points out the need of having digital strategy in an organization as a tool to consolidate and align all digital efforts with common business objectives. The author also points out the risks of not having a clear digital strategy. The scope of digital strategy is provided with some practical examples. In my view, it is very important for top management in every organization to clearly understand the scope and definition of digital strategy before moving toward the next steps.
Chapter 2 is about “Strategy Creation”. The author provides step by step process in creating digital strategy which goes deeper into the business. The author explains how to get information from stakeholder, top management, department heads, and end users. In parallel with getting the information, a method for creating a digital asset inventory is proposed with an example. An important point in this chapter is organization’s business objectives. Some examples are helpful. Many other topics are discussed ranging from asset auditing, SWOT analysis, to planning, risks and ROI. This chapter is the beginning step on creating digital strategy. In my view, corporate strategy department should not be tasked to create this strategy alone it requires great supports from other stakeholders as well as top management who understand the concept of digital transformation and has a clear view on how digital strategy will look like. Without these supports the digital strategy is less likely to happen.
Chapter 3 provides information on Strategy Implementation based on the organization’s Digital Strategy. Creation of a clear roadmap for all digital initiatives is the first step. Measurement plan is proposed to measure the success of the strategy. The author proposes to use iterative process, when implementing new digital assets, instead of using a rigid start to finish approach. Impact of user experience also explained together with user experience process. “Experience over technology” is worth noting as the author reflects the fact ,in organizations, that bad practice on technology decision always made before thinking about the actual experience that end users will have. Governance model is also proposed. Another bad practice is technical debt that the author points out in this chapter. Some suggestions are given.
Chapter 4 provides information about “Substrategies”. Some well-known substrategies such as Mobile first, Web strategy, Inbound and Outbound marketing are provided with some examples. Content and CRM are also provided as a part of substrategies. Further reading is required on this topic.
It is known that digital strategy must be continuously improved and be continuously evaluated over time. In chapter 5, the author provides how tools are used for maintaining digital strategy. Data collection and analytics are mentioned as part of maintenance activities. A/B and multivariate testing are given as tools to improve the performances of the strategy .On the topic of technical maintenance it is also worth noting that most maintenance works is corrective rather than adaptive or preventive. I believe this situation always happens in organizations all over the world. With the information suggests by the author, digital transformation of organizations require more proactive work and clear policy on strategy maintenance to avoid unnecessary redundant works which could lead to messy situation in the end.
In chapter 6, the author proposes the meaning of innovation from his perspective. The story of a company that did not manage to innovate all areas of its products then failed to stay as dominant player is explained. Innovation on mobile operating systems is also provided as an example. Building a company culture for innovation has been discussed with some suggestions.
In chapter 7, the author summarizes what he has described in chapter 1- 6.He also emphasizes the importance of having clear definition of digital strategy. The author also suggests that the digital education should be added as part of the strategy. The author gives a view on being a good strategist which requires an understanding business as a whole. Experimentation is also mentioned as a tool for innovation and creativity. Business objectives and KPI are mentioned as they are essential tools to improve the digital asset over time.
This remarkable book highlights the specific areas of digital strategy which consists of four major topics i.e. strategy creation, strategy implementation, strategy maintenance and innovation. Further reading is required if you want to see different perspectives of digital transformation.
I like the way the author describes things in this book. However, non-fiction book without an index is not familiar to me. It would be helpful for readers if an index is provided in the end of the book.
Creating a digital strategy in a company is not an easy task. It requires a lot of effort, knowledge, understanding, leadership, and right people. Good guidebooks are absolutely required. This book could be one of them.

Loved it! Was definitely worth postponing a couple of game of thrones episodes to read it.

Great and precise book that touches on a lot of important topics. I was particularly fond of the measurement plan and how important it is to not only collect numbers, but also to be prepared to react to them. I am not new to creating digital strategies and many of the points discussed are what one would do intuitively, however it's a good collection of steps to take and has some interesting samples showcased.
In a nutshell, being in the industry, I wouldn't only recommend it to my peers, but also for people that work on the client side as it gives both sides a broader perspective on digital transformation.

A practical framework to approach "digital"

Digital Strategist is a poorly understood role. Businesses expect this person to work out how to get social buzz and click-throughs. Creative directors expect this person to come up with "content" strategy (but stay away from "creative" because that part is his/hers). While peers never quite understood what digital strategists do. This book tackle this problem head-on by laying out a practical framework for a digital strategist and business to follow. It is an awsome first step to educate the industry that "digital" is much more than just "digital marketing".
