There are better books out there

This book is descent but a poor substitute in light of better alternatives, namely Zar's Biostatistical Analysis or Sokal and Rohlf's Biometry. Zar's book is my favorite. I am not as familar with Sokal and Rohlf's but know enough that I prefer the organization and context of Zar. The limitations of Steel et al. is the needless use of matrix algebra, the lack of calculations in many cases (instead, the linear model is presented without decomposition into formulas), the brief discription for many of the analyses, lack of good examples, and difficult to follow writing. On the positive side, Steel et al. have a chapter on experimental design, which Zar and Sokal and Rohlf lack, although it is not an easy chapter to follow. My recommendation is to use Zar as your primary "go to" reference on biostatistics.

Great tool for the Educator

I found that Steel et al. covered a broad range of methodology needed for biological research, and that the scope of this text is comparable to any statistical manual available. It is very functional as a reference material for troubleshooting any design or analysis problems. As a professor of research methodology, I highly recommend consulting this text for improving the statistical analysis of biological research.

An average statistics book that takes examples from biology

I found this book somewhat disappointing. I found the book to be a run-of-the-mill statistics book that just happens to draw examples from Biology as opposed to other areas. The book is perfectly usable, but in my opinion, falls somewhat short of its intended purpose.

As statistics books go, this book is above average, but it is still not the clearest book out there. I do like the inclusion of example data within the book, but often the mathematics is not presented in the clearest way. I think there are a number of better statistics books out there, books that take the reader to a more advanced level while being easier to read. My favorite book that in my opinion achieves these goals is "Mathematical Statistics and Data Analysis" by John Rice.

I also would have appreciated much more discussion of biology. The authors do not do a good job of communicating what makes the application of statistics to biology special. There are important distinctions between the application of statistics in biology and its application in other fields, in terms of the usefulness of various techniques, and the sorts of problems and complications that arise. It is clear that the "biometrical approach" influenced the authors' choice of topics, but I wish they had more explicitly discussed how the mathematics relates to concepts and phenomena that are specific to biology. This potential connection to biology was the main reason I picked up this book, and I was quite disappointed to find that the connection wasn't developed to the degree I had expected.

About the Author

Richard A. Gershon Ph.D. (Ohio University), is Professor and co-founder of the Telecommunications and Information Management program at Western Michigan University, where he teaches courses in Telecommunications Management, Law and Policy and Communication Technology. His previous publications include The Transnational Media Corporation: Global Messages and Free Market Competition, winner of the 1998 Book of the Year by the National Cable Television Center. Dr. Gershon has received the Steven H. Coltrin Professor of the Year Award (2000) by the International Radio and Television Society (IRTS), and the Barry Sherman Award for Teaching Excellence (2001) by the Management and Economics division of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication. In 2007, he was the recipient of the Distinguished Teaching Award at Western Michigan University. Dr. Gershon is a founding member of the International Telecommunications Education and Research Association (ITERA) and served as the organizations first President.

Have Dr. Gershon as a professor and his book lays out all the ins and outs to how the telecommunications business operates in a clear and concise manner. Really good book especially easy to understand alot of the more complex concepts of the industry.

There are relatively few texts currently available in the field of liquid atomization and these are mostly prepared from theoretical or experimental viewpoints and often with emphasis on fuel sprays for combustion purposes. This book provides a critical and extensive compilation of the wide range of manufacturing processes that involve the application of spray technology in industry. It covers design of atomizers as well as the performance of plant and their corresponding spray systems. The content of the book covers the needs of practising engineers from different disciplines, who may include project managers, and works, maintenance and design engineers. It addresses the lack of in-depth understanding, in the area of the application of spray in industry. Of interest to researchers is the field of liquid sprays, information on fundamental processes involved is discussed, including outlines of the contemporary and possible future research and challenges in the different fields of application.
These are all dealt with within the following general framework:

• sprays and their production;

• sprays in industrial production processes;

• processes involving vaporisation and cooling or cleaning of gases;

• processes involving spray surface impact;

• fuel sprays for fixed plant;

• spraying of hot surfaces for steel making and other metals;

• spraying of molten metals.

About the Author

Dr Ghasem Nasr was head of the Division of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering at Stockport College, England before taking up his present post. He has been involved with sprays and atomization and heat transfer for 15 years in both industry and academia. He has a number of publications in his area of interest and leads the atomization and sprays group, which carries out funded projects. He has also acted as a consultant for major companies in Middle East, Eastern and Western Europe in spray-related matters.

Andrew Yule is Professor of Mechanical Engineering at UMIST, Manchester, England and he is the leader and founder of the Atomization and Sprays Research Group at UMIST. He has 25 years experience in research in many areas of spray production and utilisation and is consultant for several companies. He was a founder of The Institute of Liquid Atomizations and Spray Systems-Europe, has authored 150 papers and was coauthor of the book Atomization of Melts (OUP, 1994).

Mr Lothar Bendig is technical director of the Research and Development department of Lechler GmBH and Co.KG, a leading German manufacturer of spray nozzles and spray equipment. As a physicist he has 28 years experience in mechanics, fluid dynamics, acoustics, heat transfer and spray technology. He is chairman of ILASS Europe.

Good coverage, poor quality

I am studying Aerospace Technology at the University of Stuttgart, Germany. During my internship at the DLR (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt e. V.) in Lampoldshausen, Germany, I had to work on a survey of the current status of injection technology. To produce a comprehensive overview I had to do a lot of research in order to collect all kinds literature dealing with atomization or injection. So I came across this book. At first I was amazed by the good introduction to the topic of sprays and their appliance in industry. I especially like the many examples that are given throughout the book. The great number of figures used greatly improves understanding. As I went on with my reading I became more and more disappointed about the poor language quality. I am not a native speaker of the English language myself and I understand how hard it can be to write in a language different from one's own, but I find the legebility is greatly reduced by the high count of grammatical mistakes. Another drawback is the very poor quality of the images used in this book. In quite a few of them I find it hard to identify what is shown on the pictures. These vitiations prevent the book from getting a five-star rating and do not justify the price by any means. I hope the next edition will correct them because the book as a whole is still a very goog approach at the topic of atomization.

Excellent technical book

I started to use this book three moth ago, because I was looking for information related with atomization. It is amazing how in one book I could find all the information related with the topic, otherwise it would take me more time to find all this information separately. The book has excellent theoretical explanations and a very good number of industrial aplications.
The book still being useful for me in a investigation of scale removal in a oilwell tubing using high pressure sprays.

Excellent book!

I started to use the book three month ago because I'm researching in spray techniques. It's amazing how in just one book I could find lots of information related with my research; it could take me more time to collect it. The book has excellent theoretical explanations supported with a very good number of industrial examples. It is still being useful for me in a study of scale removal in oilwell tubing using spray technique.

Wonderful read!

Often I say I wish the book would not end and this time was not an exception. It was superb and a very fine read. The history was accurate and period detail right on as well. I really admire Jan Foxall as a writer.

I truly felt at times that I was in the same room as the and feeling their emotion. If I had to say why, it must have been the character development as well as the author's great perspective on these people in this time.

I recommend this series as well as her series on John Plantagenet. Foxall indicates that these are her own perspectives but this one is so on target and John is very good also. The Arthur series has not yet gripped me in the same way but I think that Jan Foxall is a terrific author.

Excellent series. You just can't put it down, keeps you interested all the way through. The characters come to life and you're able to understand who they are and why they do what they do. I can't wait for the next book or books in the series to come out.

Working in his garden one day, Michael Pollan hit pay dirt in the form of an idea: do plants, he wondered, use humans as much as we use them? While the question is not entirely original, the way Pollan examines this complex coevolution by looking at the natural world from the perspective of plants is unique. The result is a fascinating and engaging look at the true nature of domestication.

In making his point, Pollan focuses on the relationship between humans and four specific plants: apples, tulips, marijuana, and potatoes. He uses the history of John Chapman (Johnny Appleseed) to illustrate how both the apple's sweetness and its role in the production of alcoholic cider made it appealing to settlers moving west, thus greatly expanding the plant's range. He also explains how human manipulation of the plant has weakened it, so that "modern apples require more pesticide than any other food crop." The tulipomania of 17th-century Holland is a backdrop for his examination of the role the tulip's beauty played in wildly influencing human behavior to both the benefit and detriment of the plant (the markings that made the tulip so attractive to the Dutch were actually caused by a virus). His excellent discussion of the potato combines a history of the plant with a prime example of how biotechnology is changing our relationship to nature. As part of his research, Pollan visited the Monsanto company headquarters and planted some of their NewLeaf brand potatoes in his garden--seeds that had been genetically engineered to produce their own insecticide. Though they worked as advertised, he made some startling discoveries, primarily that the NewLeaf plants themselves are registered as a pesticide by the EPA and that federal law prohibits anyone from reaping more than one crop per seed packet. This is not just a botany book. It is a food book and book about money, about drugs and it's a mystical experience all in one!

This is my all-time favorite plant book, even though it concerns only four plants: apples, tulips, potatoes and of all things, marijuana.Nevertheless, the details that author Pollan shares with the reader about these four plants and their histories is both fascinating and indispensable knowledge for anyone even slightly interested in botany. And i must say that if you so much as eat apples or potatoes ( read: french fries?) or enjoy spring tulips or happened to ever have savored MaryJanes aroma, whether you "inhaled" or not, you will find something in this book that will rivet your attention. Just for an example, take Johnny Appleseed spreading those millions of apple trees. Who knew that those apples that came from those trees would never be fit for eating, because as Pollan tells us, apples don't come true from seed. Thus his conclusion is that Johnny Appleseed spread apples for one purpose only: the making of hard apple cider, which was the drink of choice in early America!

This is only one amazing tidbit from The Botany of Desire but it was such a great read and so jam-packed with information that i literally read it five times over the years since its publication. I highly recommend it to everyone.

Fascinating!

I am as far removed from the sciences as anyone can be ... I am pretty hazy to what botany is and all that. I picked this book up because a friend of mine was going to watch the show and since I would rather read, I got this book. It may not be the "science" book of my youth, but I learned more in this slim volume than I ever did back in my school days. It is an eye-opener especially for this lay-person.

For a lot of the reviewers, the basic concept of plants "manipulating" the desires of humans is not a new one. For me, it is a new thought. I am not a gardener, though I do like my houseplants and have dreams of having my own garden someday. I am very new to the idea of botany and this book was enlightening for me in that respect.

Since I live in Ohio, the story of Johnny the Appleseed Man is a familiar legend in my youth and my sons just heard about him for the first time in their field trips this past fall. But Pollan made him come alive as he sketched a more thorough biography of the man who introduced the apple to the wilderness. Then Pollan combines the genetic aspect of pollination and cross-pollination with the legend of the man ... and made history and science very fascinating for this reader. He continues to do that with the tulips, the cannabis (marijuana) and finally, the potato (my absolute favorite veggie). In each section of the book, Pollan introduces thoughts and ideas to the layperson who may have just a little bit of knowledge of botany. If you're not familar with botany, this book is perfect for you. He doesn't write condescendingly like a lot of other writers do when they're talking about subjects that the average reader may not be familar with. He shares his excitement, thoughts and what he has learned with the reader and not only that, he made it fun.

Since there are a lot of reviews on this book, I will keep it short. However, the one thing that he wrote that stood out for me is: "With the exception of John Chapman, who had the imagination to identify with the bees, all these other botanists of desire went about their work from a straightforward and, it seems to me, blinkered humanist perspective. They took it for granted that domestication was something people did to plants, never the other way around." (Page 243)

That is what I thought orginally until I read this book and now ... with a different twist on perspectives, I will not be looking at plants the same way again.

fabulous book talking about the history of the apple, tulip, cannabis, and the potato. Every chapter was more interesting than the last. The potato chapter is now out of date, given what we know about the relative harmlessness of GMOs.
