Steven "Steel" Trapp has been placed in an East Coast boarding school for gifted kids by his FBI agent father. He soon discovers that there's a clubby element of the faculty and upper classmen that is very secretive and protective. To his surprise, his friend Kaleigh arrives to board at the school, and it isn't long before the two realize that this is not your normal boarding school.

It seems a select few students are recruited, while still minors, to serve as special "translators" for the US Government. People - including diplomats and dignitaries - will say things around kids that they wouldn't otherwise dare speak outside of embassies. The willing student "agent" takes a semester abroad and ends up spying for his country.

But there are dark elements at play at the school. Foreign agents may have penetrated the school's secrecy and may have sleepers in place: kids spying on future kid spies. And there is conspiracy and competition among the elite faculty that threatens security.

As Steel and Kaleigh are recruited for their first test run - trying to break a ring of pickpockets in a Boston hotel - things go impossibly wrong. Betrayal and conspiracy cloud what should have been a straightforward assignment. And all too soon, their very lives are in danger.

A sequel better than the first.

I have been reading Ridley Pearson books since Dead Aim written under the pseudonym Wendell McCall.
This book is more like his "adult" books than the first one. Pearson added more descriptive details without "boring" the reader - instead it pulls you deeper into the story.
At the end of the 1st book you think Kaileigh and Steel MUST meet again, but wonder how. Then at Wynncliff he spots red hair that - yes! - it's her.
Of course they have to have an adventure and draw new friends into the ride. The other reviews speak to some of the action. I just want to let you know that this book is a great blend of adventure and literature. I can't wait for more.
Be sure to read the other Youth orieanted books - the Kingdon Keepers, the Peter books with Dave Barry, and the Science Project.

The Academy

The newest of the Steel Trapp Series, "The Academy", is exciting and wonderfully written. This series is in the genre of Hardy Boys or Nancy Drew when I was growing up and very appealing to all ages (I read before passing them on to the younger set). My Grandchildren loved both the first and now this newest in the series. Being a Ridley fan, I am proud to say we now have three generations of family reading his novels.

This exciting series promises many amazing adventures for all involved

Steven Trapp's photographic memory earned him the nickname of Steel because anything and everything he sees gets locked down in his brain like a steel trap. And while his talent comes in handy when trying to impress teachers or distract his mom, he doesn't feel it's enough to make him intelligent. But that's where Steel is wrong because he is incredibly smart --- ingenious even --- and definitely brainy enough to have competed in the National Science Challenge held in Washington, D.C. last year. That's where he met his new friend, Kaileigh, and where they somehow landed in a life and death international espionage adventure with the FBI.

Someone has taken notice of Steel and Kaileigh, inviting both of them to enroll at Wynncliff Academy, an exclusive east coast boarding school. Steel promises his parents he'll give it a chance --- at least until Thanksgiving --- and settles into the rigid routine of the demanding school. He doesn't have much trouble with the studies part of the program; like always, he reads something once and it's committed to memory. But the food definitely isn't worth writing home about. Steel was also hoping to keep his amazing memory to himself, knowing it jams a barrier between him and others, especially when he's trying to make friends. However, this is not something he can keep a secret. And soon he is asked to try out for a fast-paced Wynncliff team sport called ga-ga, in which his unique memory aids in his ability to play.

Despite his busy schedule, Steel can't help but notice some strange stuff sneaking around the academy. It doesn't take him and Kaileigh long to uncover secret passageways, mysterious meetings and the fact that every student seems to possess a unique talent or ability; it's as if they are being recruited, like a special task force in the military. And then Steel digs too deep, falling head over heels into the heart of the academy --- where students are trained to be real spies. And Wynncliff has a special assignment just for Steel and Kaileigh.

STEEL TRAPP: THE ACADEMY is an action-packed thrill ride, filled with surprise twists, unexpected turns and nonstop excitement. Steel is a very likable individual whom readers would like to call a friend. Other characters are distinct and dynamic, each adding just the right ingredients to form balanced roles. Ridley Pearson has a unique talent for description, involving all of the senses and bringing the scenery alive in an exciting way that boosts the action instead of slowing it down:

"A chilly mist hovered above the soccer field like a veil of gauze, masking any view of the gymnasium and natatorium beyond. A murder of crows flew in and out of the smoky layers, their caws piercing the still, mud-scented morning air and echoing off the dormitory's ivy-covered brick walls. As Steel crossed the adjacent field, the mist swirled around him, looking sometimes like long fingers attempting to grab him, or animal faces, or, at last, like a gray stone archway leading directly to the ga-ga pit and the silhouetted figure that awaited him there."

Intertwined with Steel's tale is a parallel story about a group of homeless teens and the woman who leads them in hotel heists. Both stories accelerate and expand before crashing into one another in the final chapters. This exciting series promises many amazing adventures for all involved, and I can't wait for the third installment.

As such, We Are Your Sisters provides a panoramic portrait of black women's lives, presenting the words of laundresses and maids, of writers and teachers. You'll find the testimonies of slave women, as collected in the 1920s and '30s by the Federal Writers Project, on such matters as work, courtship, and family life; letters from slave women that include moving appeals for husbands to save them from slave traders; and first-person accounts of women's resistance to slavery. There are also letters from women such as Rosetta Douglass Sprague, the daughter of Frederick Douglass; accounts of the doings of upper-class blacks in the years following the Civil War; and excerpts from the diary of Frances Rollin, author of a biography of black activist and Civil War soldier Martin Delany.

Suprised, Anger, Relief , Joy

This book is better than reality tv. It is a collection of real life accounts, diary entries, and pictures of black women in America during slavery and after emancipation.
It includes excerps from slaves, doctors, teachers, writers, womens rights and black activists, maids, cooks, laundresses, etc.
It gives a real life account of what was really going on in the 1800's in black america.
The book made me laugh, cry, get angry, etc., while reading it I went through a barrage of emotions.
Among its entertainment values, it is also very educational and informative. I had no idea that there were black female lawyers and Doctors in the 1840's in the US. Some of these people were the first female lawyers and Doctors in the US.
By and far it is good reading whether for fun or information.

Well written with some hiccups, Directionless

Here's what I like about it: it's too short.
Here's what I don't like about it: it's too short.
If you're a nonprogrammer, this book will inevitably give you some hiccups. Not because the book is poorly written (indeed it is hilariously written) but because no one is able to explain a few concepts you need to know in 25 to 30 pages of text completely.

As a programmer I would've taken time to explain what events are or what events mean in the programming environment. I would have expanded on what variables are and I would've talked about different datatypes. I think overall this was a good starting point for anyone who doesn't know anything about programming or JavaScript as it pertains to acrobat. What would've helped me a great deal would have been the ability to create my own methods, how they're stored, and The best way to invoke methods in scripts. In his example: The one where you manipulate the background text and the text color, it would've been nice to know if there was a generic method where the event could have been handled by the document itself instead of the objects as you tab in and out.

As a newcomer however you do not have too many choices to pick a beginner's book in JavaScript for Acrobat and for his part this book is actually written well, is easy to follow and a great place to start from. Essentially you will reach the understanding that you would really need to get his other book for $20 from his website. So in essence this is a $22 book that you get to preview by spending $2 dollars for the privilege.

This book manages not to answer either perspective particularly well. The more I thought about it, the more I feel this deserves a 2-3 stars, not the 4 starts I had originally given to the product.

As such, I give it 3 stars for new users to Acrobat. But the acrobat community remains severely starved for a good place to start their journey with Javascript...whether seasoned or fresh..

Although this was very cheap i do not like paying for a sample. Extremely little content. His sole example code is for changing the color of a text box. The author should be ashamed of himself. The whole single lesson could or should fit on one page. Don't get scammed by this "book".

The appropriate book for a beginner. If you want to take advantage of technologies like HTML, JavaScript, PHP and MySQL for website development and you do not have any experience with web development in PHP, this book is for you.

Of course, it is too basic for someone with experience, but it is clear and correct targeted: "It is a beginner's guide".

I really would like the book to finish with some kind of roadmap about the next steps in order to continue learning about those Development Technologies.

This is the best strategy book that I have ever read (and I have read a few including Gary Hamel's books). This book clearly lays out the need for and process of developing a business innovation strategy. It does this without getting too preachy. Another reason that this book is so good is that it effectively builds on powerful concepts in organizational learning and new product development, thereby integrating some important concepts from these fields to build a strong, broad position for strategy and strategic thinking. If you are interested in innovation strategy, organizational learning and new product development, you need to read this book.

A thought provoking guide to What is Strategy?

All the Right Moves grapples with the issues which form the essence of the strategic management field. Professor Markides provides readers with a landscape for strategy which covers: 1) positioning, 2) business system interdependence, and 3) dynamics of competition. Positioning is recouched in an easy to understand and apply framework based on a new Who-What-How combination. An important message is that positioning is only part of the story. Once position is determined, management must coordinate a complex system of interrelated and interdependent activities which typically extend beyond our cognitive limits of bounded rationality. Further, once these activities are coordinated for one position, the firm cannot stand still. Competitive dynamics erode away any advantage over time, and therefore firms must continuously question their positioning . I whole-heartedly recommend this refreshing and thought provoking book to managers and academics alike.

About the Author
Nick Baker has been involved in the great sport of competitive swimming since 1961. He swam competitively for eleven years, coached club for twenty-one years, and has coached swim camps exclusively for the past eighteen years. He started his coaching career in Canada in 1972, then moved to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, in 1993 to operate a swim camp there. In 1995 Nick published 101 Winning Ways, a motivational book for competitive swimmers. The material for the book came from observing the winning ways of successful swimmers he coached. Nick cofounded the original Peak Performance Swim Camp in 1996. In 2005 he branched out on his own and founded the present-day version. Since then Nick has traveled throughout the United States and abroad, conducting his holistic camps and clinics. Past international locations include: Antigua, Aruba, Bermuda, Brazil, Canada, China, Curacao, England, Hong Kong, Jamaica, Singapore, Spain, Turkey, and Venezuela. Past US locations include: Alabama, Alaska, California, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. Peak Performance Swim Camp currently offers more than two dozen swim camps and clinics annually including clinics for triathletes and master swimmers.
