The Perfect Book for Dog Lovers

What a fun story FENWAY AND HATTIE is! I knew right away it would be the perfect book for my 9-year-old daughter who absolutely LOVES dogs. She ended up reading the book in four days, then insisted I read the book so we could talk about it. Since the story is written through the dog, Fenway's, perspective, it brings to life the imagination of the reader. Now, my daughter cannot help but stop and wonder how her dog, Charles, views the world. Fenway called Hattie's mother Food Lady. My daughter said our dog, Charles, calls me Lap Lady. This is a great book for any child and elementary classroom.

A Mad-Brilliant Middle Grade Romp with Depth and Heart!

From looking at the cover, I thought FENWAY AND HATTIE would be clever, I thought it would be cute, I thought it would be funny...and it's all of those things...but it's more. Much more.

It's a closely observed commentary (observed by a hilarious Jack Russell terrier, mind you) on human relationships and the struggles of a girl to grow and change, while staying grounded within her child self.

No, seriously! I mean it! I cannot fathom how Victoria Coe pulls this off.

The deep POV of our narrator, the dog Fenway, is insightful and utterly seamless from beginning to end. And what an earnest, bright (though often clueless), and likeable dog Fenway is! He's on the job 100% of the time, protecting his humans and doing what's right...or what he thinks is right, which unfortunately is not the same thing most of the time. His owner, Hattie, is not the only one who needs to grow and change in this story. Fenway does, too.

The complex voice of Fenway as narrator is extraordinary. I alternated between laughing out loud, paragraph after paragraph, and suddenly feeling a little stab in my heart as the well-meaning terrier's feelings are hurt again and again by things he simply is not equipped to understand. Take this bit, for example, when he thinks he's been rejected by Hattie:

"I drop down into the grass and lick my paw, like that's the part of me that hurts."

There is much rich emotional and perspective-taking material here to mine for parents and teachers who read this with children. The kids themselves won't even notice the themes they are absorbing as they tear through this delicious doggy treat of a book on their own.

But I'm taking the time here and now to notice, and to bow deeply to Victoria Coe. Well done.

Adorable and engaging

This book could not be more adorable or engaging. We get to see the world through the eyes of Fenway, the super excitable Jack Russell Terrier, and he focuses on the important things: avoiding the Wicked Floor that is too slippery for him to walk on, making sure Food Lady and Fetch Man know he's got everything under control, and, most of all, keeping Hattie, his beloved short human, safe from marauding squirrels. Readers will be so ready to join Fenway for another adventure as soon as possible.

About the Author
Jemahl Evans graduated with an MA in History, focussing on poetry and propaganda during the Wars of the Roses, and then worked for IBM in London. At the turn of the millennium, he spent a couple of years travelling and working abroad. After time spent in India, Australia, and South East Asia he returned to Britain and took up a teaching post in West London in 2005. He left his role as Head of Year in the Heathland School in 2010, and returned to Wales.

First-rate.

This is one of the best books I've come across lately, both immensely entertaining and relentlessly well written. It should appeal especially to fans of the Flashman novels, though it isn't as consistently facetious as that series. There are instances that give the book real depth—I would point particularly to a section about a charcoal burner at about the midpoint of the book. Though apparently an isolated episode, this introduces a mood and a perspective that influence one's reading of the rest of the work. Still, there's generally a light tone to the writing due to the persona of the narrator, which the author has handled admirably.
I had to trust the author for the historicity of details, but he made me feel I was in good hands throughout.

Excellent Historical Fiction

This is historical fiction written by a historian who can write fiction. That may sound bloody obvious but there is a massive difference between historical non-fiction and the narrative of a fiction. The author must understand two very different disciplines and Evans has a masterly understanding of both. The detail is mesmerising yet dropped into the narrative with such ease you would imagine this was written in the period it is set. Cervantes had the advantage of a certain proximity to the age he wrote about, Evans on the other hand is 350 plus years disadvantaged yet writes in a convincing period style that is still immediately accessible to the 21st century reader. This is a modern masterpiece in a 17th century style. I doubt there are many writers about with the skills and knowledge to pull something like this off. It is undoubtedly very different but I raced through this. Clearly intended as the first in a series, this begins the story of Blandford Candy and interposes him with the great and ghastly events of the English civil war. If you have no idea what that war was about this is the introduction you have been waiting for. An attention to detail that will leave you convinced you have been exposed to real history (which you have) and an imagined biography that puts you in the guts of dead men and the beginnings of the democratic system we take for granted today. Read it and learn something.

Alan Weintraub is an architectural photographer whose recent work includes Bay Area Style. Alan Hess is an architectural writer and author of Rizzoli's The Architecture of John Lautner. Kenneth Frampton is Ware Professor of Architecture at Columbia University's Graduate School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation. Thomas S. Hines is Professor of History and Architecture at UCLA. Bruce Brooks Pfeiffer is Director of the Frank Lloyd Wright Archives at the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation. Kathryn Smith is an architecture historian, preservation consultant, author and lecturer. Margo Stipe is Registrar of the Frank Lloyd Wright Archives at the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation. Must have for Wright fans

If you have already read the other reviews you know how good this book is. I wish they had this available when I first started getting interested in Frank Lloyd Wright back in college. All they had then were the dingy, dark, older pictures that really didn't convey just how great some of Mr. Wright's houses were. These new pictures really show how much genius he had in design. What is even more apparant when you see some of these new pictures is just how much mastery he had for setting up a home with natural light. Simply put, if you have the money and are even a casual fan, you should just treat yourself and get the book.

Best Wright House Photos!

I honestly do not know how many Wright books I have(40-50?). There are better photos of one house like Fallingwater in specific books devoted to one house, but that being said, this is the best book of photos of Wright Houses, particularly Usonian houses that I have ever seen. It is simply stunning. Even the site photographs are magnificent. When you compare the houses that have been moved from their original site(Pope-Leighy, Gordon)to those that have not it makes the genius of Wright even more amazing.

Visually Excellent!

I got this book to give me some more ideas in poster design and it's fantastic! Some works are really arty and don't really communicate the fundamentals of who, when and where, clearly however, there are a great many examples in here of excellent poster design concepts and artwork. Overall if you're simply looking for a whole bunch of different visual idea's then this book is great!

surprisingly good

I bought this book with suspicious in mind but it came out to be a really good surprise. The posters inside are indeed innovative, and most of them are extremelly well conceived and beautifully crafted: a great source of inspiration to most designers. A short explanation follows each of them and adds a lot to it.

On the other side, the editorial project is quite poor. Lots of unecessary graphics and 'water marks' that stand in the way of the important pictures.

Open the Treasure Within

Do yourself what may be the biggest favor of your life: open your heart and mind to the wisdom in this book. Citing the Bhagavad Gita, the Bible, the Gnostic Gospels and many others, the author reveals the essence they all have in common: the desire to reconnect us--permanently--with God/ our Higher Selves/ the kingdom of Heaven that is within us. Step by step, the author shows us how to choose our Higher Selves rather than acting out of our Lower Selves. Then the author heals this apparently dualistic way of thinking by showing us how to integrate the 'two' selves. I would consider the price of the book worth the price just for the acronym he gives to the word 'fear.'

The Seven Victories of the title are accomplishments that you, as a Divine Child, can attain. With stunning simplicity the author shows the reader the battle that goes on within each of us--and how to bring it to a peaceful end. Want peace in the world? Begin by learning how to achieve peace within. He does this by means of 7 steps to claiming our victories. I plan to concentrate on a different 'victory' each day of the week; since there are seven, this works out perfectly. At the end of each day, I shall journal the results of this focus. By doing this for an extended period of time, I hope to internalize the wisdom in this book so that I can live forevermore in contact with the Divine Within.

filled with wisdom

As an author myself, I'm aware that there are two different ways to write a book. One is to come up with the words yourself, using your own limited intelligence. The other is to basically let the words come THROUGH you, from a HIGHER intelligence. I'm not talking about "channeling," but just the act of creating from a place of oneness rather than separation.

It was obvious to me that this book was of the latter kind- it came from a place of deep wisdom and higher intelligence within Michael Jones. Therefore, I would consider it "inspired"- born of spirit. This one thing alone makes the book a quality work.

Secondly, I was amazed at the amount of true wisdom. Sometimes you can get an idea about how wise an author is by the little things they say- the details, the commentary. Not only are the major points of the book very insightful, but the explanation and detail was excellent as well.

Finally, as Michael Jones points out, there's an old saying that "When the student is ready, the teacher appears." Well, I was ready for a spiritual breakthrough, and this book definitely helped to give it to me.

I've always dealt with a lot of negative emotions like guilt, anger, and grief, and I now have a way of dealing with these kinds of emotions. Michael says that negative qualities (he calls them "lower attributes") always have an OPPOSITE ("higher attributes"). For example, there is love vs. hatred, strength vs. weakness, freedom vs. bondage, and so on. Basically, every "lower attribute" has an opposite, "higher attribute." This teaching has given me a framework to work with, and a greater clarity of purpose in terms of WHAT to do, and HOW and WHY to do it.

Basically, the book is amazing and I recommend it to anyone ready for a spiritual breakthrough.

Photographer Peter Menzel and journalist Faith D'Aluisio traveled around the world interviewing researchers who want to jump-start our evolution by designing and building electrical and mechanical extensions of ourselves--robots. Their book, Robo Sapiens, takes its title from the notion that our species might somehow merge with our creations, either literally or symbiotically. The photography is brilliant, showing the endearing and creepy sides of the robots and roboticists and feeling like stills from unmade science-fiction films. D'Aluisio's interviews are insightful and often very funny, as when she calls MIT superstar Rodney Brooks on his statement that we ought not "overanthropomorphize" people. Brooks is an interesting study. Having shaken up the robotics and artificial-intelligence fields with his elimination of high-level intelligence and dedication to tiny, insectoid, built-from-the-ground-up robots, he now works on large, human-mimicking machines. But hundreds of other researchers, in Japan, Europe, and the United States, are working on various aspects of machine behavior, from the eerily lifelike robotic faces of Fumio Hara and Alvaro Villa to the monkeylike movement of Brachiator III; each of them casts a bit of light on the future of their field in their short interviews. The authors of such award-winning works of photojournalism as Material World: A Global Family Portrait and Women in the Material World, photojournalist Menzel and D'Alusio, a former TV documentary producer, here collect interviews, essays, illustrations, and numerous photographs of all aspects of current research and actual production locations using robots, some of which approach the "intelligent" level. The coverage includes more than 100 different researchers and developers with their robots. Although the actual color photographs were not included, a sample indicates that Menzel's background as a photojournalist stood him in good stead. The interviews are interesting, and the range of applications areas is fascinating; from medicine to housecleaning, from game playing to dancing robots, there is something for everyone in this collection. While some of the resource and source material appendixes were unavailable at the time of review, the authors appear to try to provide enough information so that readers interested in following up a certain avenue will be able to do so. The robots are coming...

In view of the news last week that Kevin Warwick, one of the roboticists talked about in this book, had a chip imbedded permanently under his skin, this book takes on a profound significance. The book includes interviews with some of the major researchers in robotics and artificial intelligence, and has many beautiful photographs. In addition to the news of Warwick's operation, other news of exciting advances in robotics have been reported in the technicial journals and in the news media in recent months. And with the advent of robot toys and a Hollywood movie about artificial intelligence, it seems that robotics has taken us by storm. These developments are indeed exciting, for those working in the field of artificial intelligence, and those that are not, and even though there is perhaps a long way to go before we are priveleged to be among autonomous thinking machines working and playing among us, we are witnessing a good beginning. Indeed we are very lucky to be in a time when the dreams of the researchers in artificial intelligence are finally beginning to be realized, even at a modest level. This book is, thankfully, optimistic in its appraisal of robotics, and as the name of it implies, it has a somewhat different viewpoint on its future. Robots, it contends, will not necessarily be separate independent entities possessing superior intelligence and physical capabilities. By taking on chips underneath their skin, by using hearing aids, by employing heart defibrillators, by reverse engineering the human brain, and by immersing other devices in their bodies, humans will (slowly?) evolve into a superposition of the biological and mechanical. Robo sapiens - great title, awful book

The authors traveled a lot to get their interviews but the resulting book is a big disappointment. I got the impression that they were more interested in making some clever photos than producing a good piece of work on the subject of robotics. To be fair, there were a few items of interest but they didn't make the book worthwhile. The format of the book is interviews which makes the reading rather boring, the content disorganized, and any meaningful information very difficult to find. Great book!

This book provides a great review of "who" has/is doing "what" in the robotics field. It provides a sound brief review of the field without too much depth, making it an enjoyable book for readers of all backgrounds. The pictures are great. It is a great book for robotics researchers. I believe it will be a collectors item 20 years from now.
