Worlds in Collision, by Immanuel Velikovsky

With this book Immanuel Velikovsky first presented the revolutionary results of his 10-year-long interdisciplinary research to the public, founded modern catastrophism - based on eyewitness reports by our ancestors - shook the doctrine of uniformity of geology as well as Darwin's theory of evolution, put our view of the history of our solar system, of the Earth and of humanity on a completely new basis - and caused an uproar that is still going on today. Worlds in Collision - written in a brilliant, easily understandable and entertaining style and full to the brim with precise information - can be considered one of the most important and most challenging books in the history of science. Not without reason was this book found open on Einstein's desk after his death. For all those who have ever wondered about the evolution of the earth, the history of mankind, traditions, religions, mythology or just the world as it is today, Worlds in Collision is an absolute MUST-READ!

Review
Among general non-fiction, Worlds in Collision was being outsold by only one book - the Bible. The epicenter of a literary earthquake --N. Y. Times Book Review

It is more fascinating reading than anything to be found on any fiction table. It is absolutely original and convincing. --Pittsburgh Press

This book has literally shaken the thinking world to its foundations. Not since Darwin's Origin of Species has there been advanced an idea so original, controversial, and stupendous in its implications. --Miami Herald

From the Publisher
Worlds in Collision is a special, an extraordinary book - not only by its contents, but also by the response it has received.

It is one of the few scientific books of the past centuries that have a direct profound importance for humanity - individuals and society alike. In fact it is a book that puts our present view of the world on a whole new fundament - not in some abstract specialized disciplines remote from practical life, but in a broad range of areas like astronomy, cosmology, physics, geology, paleontology, biology, history, archaeology, literature, ethnology, theology, mythology, psychology; and in addition it has an important influence on the way man sees himself individually and socially.

It is the first time in centuries that a scientist didn't choose the direct way to his specialized colleagues in order to make the results of his research known, but addressed himself to the general public in a simple and clear language and presentation - for which he was harshly punished by the scientific establishment.

It is exactly this reaction from representatives of the "objective" sciences - that even match some medieval practices - which shows that this book deeply shakes the foundations of our knowledge - and belief. Because of this book being so special, it has deeply penetrated the consciousness of many people. Others however have preferred to forget it - or at least would like to do so. Due to this purposeful oblivion a younger generation doesn't even know about it any more, although today - almost 60 years after its first publication - it hasn't become less of a subject. On the contrary due to new results of scientific research and recent geological and climatic developments its importance has even increased. This, too, is something special in the flood of today's short-lived literary and scientific `flash in the pans'.

It is important for everyone of us and for science at large to deal with this book. Therefore we are happy to take upon ourselves the responsible task of making the complete works of Immanuel Velikovsky - not just this book - available to the public again in its unchanged form. Publishing this book - and this unfortunately also is something special for non-fiction - has required a fair amount of courage, which we proudly and consciously muster up.

From the Author
Worlds in Collision is a book of wars in the celestial sphere that took place in historical times. In these wars the planet earth participated too. This book describes two acts of a great drama: one that occurred thirty-four to thirty-five centuries ago, in the middle of the second millennium before the present era; the other in the eighth and the beginning of the seventh century before the present era, twenty-six centuries ago. Accordingly this volume consists of two parts, preceded by a prologue.

Harmony or stability in the celestial and terrestrial spheres is the point of departure of the present-day concept of the world as expressed in the celestial mechanics of Newton and the theory of evolution of Darwin. If these two men of science are sacrosanct, this book is a heresy. However, modern physics, of atoms and of the quantum theory, describes dramatic changes in the microcosm - the atom - the prototype of the solar system; a theory, then, that envisages not dissimilar events in the macrocosm - the solar system - brings the modern concepts of physics to the celestial sphere.

This book is written for the instructed and uninstructed alike. No formula and no hieroglyphic will stand in the way of those who set out to read it. If, occasionally, historical evidence does not square with formulated laws, it should be remembered that a law is but a deduction from experience and experiment, and therefore laws must conform with historical facts, not facts with laws.

The reader is not asked to accept a theory without question. Rather, he is invited to consider for himself whether he is reading a book of fiction or non-fiction, whether what he is reading is invention or historical fact. On one point alone, not necessarily decisive for the theory of cosmic catastrophism, I borrow credence: I use a synchronical scale of Egyptian and Hebrew histories which is not orthodox.

Velikovsky recently confirmed
By Shelley Isom
Velikovsky's earthshaking conclusions in this book are slowly being verified, including the fact that Venus is much hotter than it should be if it was just an ordinary planet as conventional science has it. Below is the latest (Aug. 2016) verification:

Verification of Velikovsky’s theory about vast flooding, waters higher than mountains, after earthquakes killing millions in Worlds in Collision (2009 reprint)
[Articles were in google news on 8/5/16]
From Andy Coghlan article in New Scientist (2016) (also in Scientific American):
Legend has it that a great flood engulfed China 4000 years ago. Lasting for more than 20 years, it was finally tamed by the heroic efforts of Emperor Yu, whose Xia dynasty marked the birth of Chinese civilisation and its transition into the Bronze Age.
“This was the first stage in the founding of Chinese civilisation,” says Wu Qinglong of Nanjing Normal University. “But no scientific evidence had been discovered until now.”
This lack of evidence for such a flood had prompted some to challenge the truth of the story.
But we now have the first compelling evidence that the flood did actually happen at the time and place chronicled in the legend.
In the Jishi Gorge, along the Yellow river, his team discovered rocks and sedimentary formations that could only have existed as a result of a cataclysmic flood.
They also found evidence of an earthquake and analysed the skeletons of three children (see picture below), which helped them recreate the timeline of what happened.
“The first thing was the earthquake, and this triggered a huge landslide that blocked the river,” says Darryl Granger of Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana. The dammed water became a lake 200 metres deep.
“The lake built up behind and took six to nine months to fill up before the water overtopped, causing the dam to fail catastrophically,” he says.
This released a huge volume of water, estimated at between 12 and 17 cubic kilometres, two to three times as much as contained by Loch Ness in Scotland.
The floods engulfed Lajia, the archaeological site 25 kilometres downstream where the bodies of the three children killed by the earthquake months earlier lay buried, and where the world’s oldest noodles were found.

Very interesting reading
By Ed from Sunrise
By reading several comments on the Internet and reviews from when the book came out, it seems that in present times science has become a new religion. Everything has to be discussed and reviewed within a dogma, and nothing can be included in the discussion unless it follows a previous trend of though.
Even if Venus was not a comet born from Jupiter an the rest as mentioned in the book, which could be taken as an interpretation, looks like the scientific community did not read the other parts of the book, or they ignored completly the documented information from when "science" was not the current science. If I'm not mistaken, was science that said that we were the center of the universe and everything else rotated around us (a little ego centric if you ask me, but this was the science at the time, these were not witch doctors!)
Just to illustrate the point, I will mention one thing as an example that is in the book, that it would be interesting for science to investigate and explain how that could had happened, when no technology or means of long distance communication were available. The Mayans define the costellation of Scorpio the same as the ancient euro asians when it really does not have a shape of a scorpion or even close to it. Recently it was found that the Summerians knew about the cycle of Jupiter 1,200 years prior de European science discovered.
Can science today with all the knowledge and technology available explain these simple and documented facts? Because they are facts, they are documented.
NASA reported in 1984 about an object that was afecting the orbits of Neptune and Uranus. After that they went silent on the subject. Few months ago on main stream news papers, the subject is back........
We should not make with science the same mistake that we made with religion in the dark ages, were everything had to fit within a dogma, otherwise it was wrong. We have new information almost daily, where previous boundaries are been broken or challenged.
Worlds in Collision is a very good book, entreteining, and I believe that even if the science part is open for discussion, one has to recue the value of the research done with the information available at that time. It could well be that ancient scriptures regarding incredible events may have a logical explanation after all, as new information in known. The cause of these events probably did not happened as mentioned in the book, but we can not rule out something similar with other players involved. With the information available today, this book puts on the table the possibility of a very interesting discussion.
Lets keep an open mind and don't just throw the baby out with the bathwater.

A worthy read even if you don't agree with findings.
By B. Brink or Lotte S.
I first heard of Velikovsky from Carl Sagan. Sagan's Demon Haunted World (DHW) book is one of my favorites. When DHW is carefully applied to Worlds in Collision, much of the content is generally acceptable as possible with one huge exception: Velikovsky's conclusions about planets having super-altered orbits is not the only interpretation that can be drawn from historical evidence. For example, he shows how different calendars had different year lengths and lunar orbital periods. A brief analysis of these by carefully keeping a consistent time reference suggests that the interpretations could be due to changes in Earth's spin rate exclusively --without changes in orbital periods of any astronomical body. A change in Earth's spin rate is known to happen with large earthquakes. Any sense that Saturn or other planets were oriented at pole is an interpretation by Earth's inhabitants. More likely the Sun had bipolar outflow similar to local star AU Microscopii. Read this book even if you disagree, so that you can disagree using knowledge.
