Nothing is Hidden, by Lynne Cohen

Nothing is Hidden features both well-known and recent unpublished works by acclaimed Canadian photographer Lynne Cohen, beginning with images from the early 1970s. The book shows the consistency and depth with which she has mined her chosen theme of uninhabited domestic and institutional interior spaces. Depicting formally and not so formally arranged uncanny interiors, Cohen's photographs are sometimes wryly humorous, sometimes bleak, and frequently both. Her vision is informed by a profound feeling for the mystery in the ordinary, what is on the surface but out of sight. This is the first in a series of annual publications to be published by Steidl celebrating the winner of the Scotiabank Photography Award, Canada's largest contemporary photography award for an established Canadian artist. Scotiabank is a leader among Canadian corporations and internationally for its charitable donations and philanthropic activities. The award was established by photographer Edward Burtynsky with Jane Nokes of Scotiabank.

biggest rock is BEST rock
By ceep
Following the age-old adage of "biggest rock is BEST rock", this is my favourite Cohen book for it's dimensions. Nothing quite replicates seeing large-format photography in person, but this well-printed and amply sized book allows you to pore over the stark details of Cohen's alienating human landscapes.

About the Author
The author and politician Ignatius Donnelly was born in Philadelphia on 3 November 1831. He was educated in the public schools of his native city, studied law, was admitted to the bar, and practiced. He went to Minnesota in 1857, was elected lieutenant governor in 1859, and again in 1861, and was then elected to Congress as a Republican, serving from 7 December 1863 until 3 March 1869. Besides doing journalistic work he has written an Essay on the Sonnets of Shakespeare, and his most enduring work, Atlantis, the Antediluvian World (New York, 1882), in which he attempts to demonstrate that there once existed in the Atlantic Ocean, opposite the straits of Gibraltar, a large island, known to the ancients as "Atlantis"; and Ragnarok (1883), in which he tries to prove that the deposits of clay, gravel, and decomposed rocks, characteristic of the drift age, were the result of contact between the earth and a comet.

Would be great WITH PICTURES!
By Star
Great information but...I ordered the digital kindle ebook. NO pictures, no maps! This book relies highly on references to the maps, and ok, I searched the web to see what the author was writing about, but why should I have to?
Why can't Amazon figure out a way to add pictures to their ebooks? The covers are graphics.

Particularly frustrating was the section on language and the Mayan or Landa alphablet..seriously ## signs?
I am including a picture I took of the alphabet by searching on Google.

Now, I know that receiving these quickly and inexpensively through Kindle is amazing and all but, gee whiz, in a book such as this the graphics are vital.

Lenial's Book Reviews
By Lenial Fitz
The subject of lost civilizations in general, and Atlantis in particular, is a very interesting subject, and this book starts and ends well, but in between, the author spends too much time trying to prove his theories. He also makes pretty big leaps when declaring things to be proofs. For example, he mentions that the bible says that Cain was exiled to the East, and he thinks that means he must have started in the west. This is not true. You can head east from anywhere on Earth. You do not have to be in the West. There are plenty of other examples of this. Also, I didn't like how it replaces letters of the ancient alphabets that he compares with symbols. Plus, when I visited "Sacred Texts.com, I was disappointed to find that the entire alphabet that he based his language comparisons on has been discredited.

I also would liked to read his theory on how Atlantis fits into the theory of continental drift. It may have emerged after continental drift by volcanic or seismic activity, but I would liked to hear Donnelly's theory.

Atlantis may very well have existed, but the "proofs" that are offered in this book are not convincing and his lengthy comparisons of evidence gets a little boring. He would have done better to focus more on the civilization and the possible ruins than on trying to prove something that is not provable.

A Whale of a Tale
By Retired Reader
This book, as Donnelly makes clear, is based on the premise that the fragmentary work by Plato concerning a lost civilization on a continental sized island in the Atlantic is authentic history. Donnelly argues that this account is not a metaphor or allegory, but refers to a place that actually existed. To ensure his readers are on the same sheet of music, Donnelly begins his book with Plato's full account of this island and its civilization.

Using this account as a base, Donnelly devotes the remainder of the book developing evidence supporting the validity of Plato's story. Now it should be noted that his book was published in the 1880's and represents the knowledge then available. Also Donnelly tends to extrapolate from what was then known of world history to conclusions not necessarily supported by existing evidence. He makes more than his share of leaps of logic and often does ignore contradictory evidence.

So what to make of this book? It represents what now is called "out of the box thinking" and a serious exercise in creative use of evidence to make the case that world civilization was inherited from a unique place and people collectively known as Atlantis.

It would be easy to dismiss this book and its author, but that would be a mistake. Donnelly was a crank, but so are most dreamers. Much of what is enjoyed today as modern technology originated with such folks. A few more cranks may be a good thing.

Final note the edition of this book that I read does not contain any of Donnelly's original illustrations.

Eat, Pray, Love: One Woman's Search for Everything Across Italy, India and Indonesia, by Elizabeth Gilbert

The 10th anniversary edition of one of the most iconic, beloved, and bestselling books of our time.

Elizabeth Gilbert’s Eat Pray Love touched the world and changed countless lives, inspiring and empowering millions of readers to search for their own best selves. Now, this beloved and iconic book returns in a beautiful 10th anniversary edition, complete with an updated introduction from the author, to launch a whole new generation of fans.

In her early thirties, Elizabeth Gilbert had everything a modern American woman was supposed to want—husband, country home, successful career—but instead of feeling happy and fulfilled, she was consumed by panic and confusion. This wise and rapturous book is the story of how she left behind all these outward marks of success, and set out to explore three different aspects of her nature, against the backdrop of three different cultures: pleasure in Italy, devotion in India, and on the Indonesian island of Bali, a balance between worldly enjoyment and divine transcendence.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Gilbert (The Last American Man) grafts the structure of romantic fiction upon the inquiries of reporting in this sprawling yet methodical travelogue of soul-searching and self-discovery. Plagued with despair after a nasty divorce, the author, in her early 30s, divides a year equally among three dissimilar countries, exploring her competing urges for earthly delights and divine transcendence. First, pleasure: savoring Italy's buffet of delights--the world's best pizza, free-flowing wine and dashing conversation partners--Gilbert consumes la dolce vita as spiritual succor. "I came to Italy pinched and thin," she writes, but soon fills out in waist and soul. Then, prayer and ascetic rigor: seeking communion with the divine at a sacred ashram in India, Gilbert emulates the ways of yogis in grueling hours of meditation, struggling to still her churning mind. Finally, a balancing act in Bali, where Gilbert tries for equipoise "betwixt and between" realms, studies with a merry medicine man and plunges into a charged love affair. Sustaining a chatty, conspiratorial tone, Gilbert fully engages readers in the year's cultural and emotional tapestry--conveying rapture with infectious brio, recalling anguish with touching candor--as she details her exotic tableau with history, anecdote and impression.

From The New Yorker
At the age of thirty-one, Gilbert moved with her husband to the suburbs of New York and began trying to get pregnant, only to realize that she wanted neither a child nor a husband. Three years later, after a protracted divorce, she embarked on a yearlong trip of recovery, with three main stops: Rome, for pleasure (mostly gustatory, with a special emphasis on gelato); an ashram outside of Mumbai, for spiritual searching; and Bali, for "balancing." These destinations are all on the beaten track, but Gilbert's exuberance and her self-deprecating humor enliven the proceedings: recalling the first time she attempted to speak directly to God, she says, "It was all I could do to stop myself from saying, 'I've always been a big fan of your work.'"

From Bookmarks Magazine
It's easy to envy Elizabeth Gilbert: she has had a run of successful, critically lauded books (National Book Award finalist for The Last American Man; Pushcart Prize winner for Pilgrims) and has sustained a successful career as a journalist for Spin and GQ. Her "trademark conversational" prose (Atlanta Journal-Constitution) is on display in her first memoir-cum-travelogue, yet not all reviewers are pleasantly engaged. They agree that the 108 chapters of the book (the same number of Buddhist prayer beads on a japa mala) are filled with interesting characters and vivid descriptions. But some critics feel Gilbert's likability and humor obscure the deeper themes of her search for enlightenment.

Great, for what it is.
By taniam
I find it so surprising--reading the angry, negative reviews--that the people who hated the book hated it for exactly the reasons why some steer clear away from the the spiritual-journey-memoir genre. Yes, the author is self-absorbed, yes, she seems to think of only trite stuff, yes, she seems self-indulgent with her problems. And yes, she's allowed. It is after all a book that is positioned to address these things in the author's self; who otherwise would not be searching for something more: more meaning and more appreciation in/of her life.
Here is a woman who shows all the possibly-perceived-as-lacking-substance thoughts of hers and we are throwing tomatoes at her. One thing, she obviously wasn't afraid of that. She wasn't aiming to be coming off as some deeply wise woman but a fumbling girl-woman trying to break out of what she felt was imminent disaster (had she had the baby and delayed her need to find out what she truly wants from her life she might have left not only her husband, but their child, or most probably ending up not leaving out of guilt and becoming crazy instead: exposing her family to that for years; not an uncommon reality). She is not one for anti-depressants, remember.
This memoir falls in the same category as the TV show Sex and the City (of which it was compared to in a review here). Both get trampled for being supposedly superficial, covering the silly plights of city girls who don't know what they want and yet have everything. But this book--as the TV show--actually are part of a wider story that is illiciting reactions from the public because it reflects the transition in which women in the modern world are experiencing: now that we have equality with men professionally, now that we are liberated from all the limitations being a woman dictated two generations ago, how does that affect us? From a distance, in a glance, it seems that women have all the cards to play with now. But this book and many other works by women and/or about women of this generation show that having all those cards does not mean Happiness.
There are still things in society--in regards to a woman's role--that grates. And then there are things within our Modernised, Westernized, Individualized, Ambitious selves, that are lacking.
This is what Miss Gilbert's search is about, and what she represents.
On a collective level, much of the modern world is in search of God, Spirituality (one just needs to walk through bookstores in the US and see the plethora of soul searching self help books on the shelves). This is what needs to be observed and understood as a phenomena in the West; the small voices, small cries, here and there by those who come up with the balls to share their journeys and thoughts with us--no matter how trite-sounding, how shallow-seeming--are part of a collective howl for the meaning of life.
Elizabeth Gilbert's voice is just one of many that calls for recognition as part of a chorus for something that firstly, many women are hollering about, and secondly, humanity in general--humanity in the first world--are crying for: some kind of guidance, indication, that the collective paths we fought for and chose (the best education, career ambitions realised, a certain amount of money needed to live that certain kind of magazine-lifestyle life--which is what Liz Gilbert's life is a reflection of, remember--love in the form of marriage and what society dictates) are truly the things that give us peace and happiness in the infinite sense.
Eat, Pray, Love might not be that deep, wise voice representing the deep, wise journey into the deep, wise self. But this book's packaging and tone, hell, its WORDS, never did say it was. It is a fumbling--almost child-like in its guilelessness--show of the ego's awareness and needs, and its attempt at searching for what many people from all walks of life only wish they could go out and find: THEMSELVES. SELF, being the keyword here. And in this memoir, ultimately, God, being in each of our selves.
To the people who were disappointed that the author didn't seem to give a hoot about India's poverty, they must have not read the book through: Miss Gilbert never ventured out of her ashram and the little village it is located in, after making a decision to further develop her meditation skills and thus skipping the rest of India. She also ignored Italy's corruption with her indulging in good food and focus on learning and enjoying the Italian language. Again, the critics missed the point of this memoir. It's a book about a writer, a New Yorker, a recently-divorced-woman-in-her-early-thirties' journey to heal and find spiritual strength through various means: pleasure first to recover (Italy), spiritual examination and purging (India), combining the two for balance (Bali), which would result hopefully in the kind of substance and depth and balance that so many critics mentioned she lacks.
One doesn't pick this book up to: 1. Be exposed to India's poverty and expect the author to discuss that in depth. 2. Be exposed to Italy's corruption and expect the author to discuss that in depth. 3. Be exposed to Balinese wiles and expect the author to discuss that in depth. (which she actually did in the account of the Balinese woman she raised money for to buy the land the woman needed to build a home).

Next time you pick a book up at the bookstore, call up your powers of perception before purchasing it. A book IS pretty much its cover. Did everyone really expect a book titled "Eat, Pray, Love" A Woman's Search for Everything, to be an experience of religious fervor, one that would reveal the secrets of the universe? It's a story about a girl who thought everything she thought she wanted, would bring her happiness. It didn't. It didn't for her, and possibly not for many other women. If it took this one woman to go to Italy, India, and Indonesia, to get away after a difficult and painful divorce to heal and get perspective--instead of festering and turning into a pile of flesh in depression--then by all means. Yes, she financed her travels through her book advance--after giving away the suburban home and NYC apartment to her ex-husband. And if she wrote this book for us, it's really for us to appreciate and enjoy the ride with her. Anybody else who got so upset needed only to put the book down and pick another one to their taste. If anything, that's this book's lesson: Do what makes you smile and thankful for life.

Laugh-Whine-Obsess
By maya j
'Eat, Pray, Love...' was a book I liked and disliked at the same time. On the one hand, it was fresh, witty and fun, and on the other hand it would devolve into obsessive ruminations about Liz Gilbert's failed marriage, her attempt to find God and her sadness and perceived "misery". It was at once clever and boring, hot and cold, cathartic and self-indulgent. It's not a horrible read (closer to 3-1/2 starts), it's just that over the course of the book, the incessant whining takes its toll.

The book begins with Liz Gilbert questioning her marriage. She ultimately leaves her husband, finds a boyfriend, gets rid of him too and thus starts the quest for God and the meaning of "her" life. She does this by eating her way through Italy, praying and meditating in India, and hanging out and making whoopee in Bali. Initially I loved her insight and wit. I found myself actually laughing out loud at her intuitive commentary; but then I found myself getting bored (and frankly irritated) at her droning on and on about being so sad and devastated, and the pain she was in, and the heartache, and sorrow and misery, ad nauseam. I was waiting for her to describe something truly miserable, heart-breaking or tragic that had happened in her life, but all I found was a woman who went through a couple of failed relationships and acts like she's the only one in the world who's been through it. I kept thinking, good grief, get over yourself girl! I mean, really, the majority of women who go through divorces (or worse) pick themselves up and move on without self-indulgent self-reflection for a week, nonetheless a whole year! Most of the women I know have no time for self-pity, and Liz Gilbert was "The Queen" of self-pity (at least in this book). It started out funny, witty and insightful in Italy, crescendoing to a full-bore whine in India, and ending with her usual self-absorbed persona in Bali. She goes through life as a Drama Queen, and she seems to see every misstep or unpleasant experience as totally devastating. I think a person who grew up in an intact, two-parent home, married once to a husband who loved and provided for her (and who has been able to promptly find replacements for him), in addition to always seeming to be able to get what she needs when she needs it, whether it's food, travel, love, or money, is not someone who needs to be writing a book about her perceived sorrow and misery. She needs to give many, many thanks, stop obsessing, and MOVE ON!

dishonest and poorly written
By Theresa Twain
I've read several of the reviews posted here and though I couldn't finish this book, it seems to me that what's wrong with it is not so much the author's hollow-souled narcissism but her lack of intellectual seriousness. Someone gave me this book as a birthday present. That it has received a lot of attention is no surprise. Look at the drivel America reads. Light, shallow laughs, sex, food, not much real thought. That's the sum of this book. Feel-good rubbish that inspires not one iota of serious thought. Gilbert's slapphappy universe is one in which everything can be solved with pizza and fresh mozarella. Every paragraph contains at least one stock one-liner. This isn't literature. It's stand-up comedy of the worst kind. We've read it all before. She claims she can make friends with anyone. It's precisely that lack of discernment and depth that makes this story forgettable. The prose is laced with one cliche, one trite and cutesy obvservation after another. Some reviewer here said this book is not a book but a magazine article. Exactly right. I finally closed the book when I read that while in India she wanted to "valet park" a destitue family into a new life. It isn't just that the phrase is a silly toss-off modernism but that there's no true emotion in it. You'll never know how this woman really feels. Don't waste your money on it.

It includes a song that kids sing to make fun of him and it is repeated multiple times
By Golden
The first 2/3 of the book talks about Lester and his anger. It includes a song that kids sing to make fun of him and it is repeated multiple times. I found more of the book modeled that type of bully behavior than addressed the specific concern. It had 2 pages on suggestions for managing anger.

I much prefer The Red Beast. Though it's written for Aspergers, the ideas apply to all and encourages empathy.

son got the message
By OlieMo
I ordered this book for my autistic son who has been struggling with anger lately. While reading it he was engaged and amused by the storyline, stopping to show me some of the silly pictures while laughing. When he finished I asked him if he learned anything from the book and his response was "yes, I learned that I shouldn't get so mad and just blow up all the time." Exactly what I wanted him to learn!

The Brokenhearted, by Amelia Kahaney

Perfect for fans of Marissa Meyer's The Lunar Chronicles and Marie Lu's Legend series, Amelia Kahaney's The Brokenhearted is a gorgeous, gritty, and imaginative take on the superhero story. Anthem Fleet, talented ballerina and heir to the Fleet fortune, has always been closely guarded by her parents in their penthouse apartment. Lured by the handsome and dangerous Gavin, Anthem is drawn into the dark and exhilarating world on the wrong side of town. But when the couple runs into trouble, Gavin goes missing and Anthem winds up dead . . . only to awaken in an underground lab with a bionic heart ticking in her chest. Now she can run faster, jump higher, fight better. But the only thing that matters to her is getting Gavin back. And when she uncovers the sinister truth behind those she trusted the most, she is determined to use her newfound powers for the ultimate revenge.

Set in the ruined fictional landscape of Bedlam, a Gotham-like city, this tale of heartbreak and revenge is both gripping and cinematic.

From Booklist
In the dystopian city of Bedlam, rich, privileged teen Anthem Fleet falls madly in love with Gavin, a poor artist of the South Side. Risking her parents’ wrath and the ire of her abusive, vindictive boyfriend, Anthem sneaks to Gavin’s warehouse apartment for a night of lovemaking, only to have it broken up by masked individuals who kidnap Gavin. Alone, she struggles to find her way back home, a journey that gets her killed and then revived with a hummingbird heart transplant and a determination to avenge her lover’s kidnapping. Kahaney approaches this rather troubling story with a light touch. Bedlam’s newspaper is the Daily Dilemma, and people get hooked on Droopies, MoodEases, and Pharms; smoke Rollies; and frequent the Hades Mall. Bad guys gas-and-dash, poisoning people with giggle gas to harvest their organs and sell them at the Chop Shop, while rich drug addicts detox at Weepee Valley after Interventions or Anxiety Assessments. But the story itself is troubling and violent, a miserable juxtaposition of a society—and love—gone bad and the surprising power of hope. Grades 8-12. --Frances Bradburn

Review
“Gorgeously written and richly imagined, this heart–pounding, high–octane novel of suspense, romance, and revenge introduces a stunning new voice in YA fiction as well as a new kind of superhero. You won’t be able to put this one down.” (NEW YORK TIMES bestselling author Aimee Friedman)

“An urgent dare–ya through a darkly, wildly imagined future. Go ahead and try to predict the hairpin turns and steep reverses as you race through this sharply–conceived urban odyssey.” (Adele Griffin, author of ALL YOU NEVER WANTED)

“A ripping…page-turner.” (Kirkus Reviews)

“graceful world–building [with] strong characterizations and an enveloping plot…” (Publishers Weekly)

“Anthem, with her unwillingness to be just another brokenhearted girl, will likely inspire legions of teenage girls to forget the guys and go kick some butt.” (Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books)

“With the dystopian angle, the fast–paced action, and the stellar cover, this novel is bound to float/fly off the shelves.” (School Library Journal)

From the Back Cover

Some kinds of Heartbreak aren't temporary.

Prima ballerina Anthem Fleet has lived her whole life by her parents' strict rules, never leaving the pristine North Side of Bedlam City. Until she meets Gavin. An artist from the dangerous South Side of town, Gavin is like no one Anthem has ever met—and she falls for him suddenly and completely.

But their romance crashes down around them one terrible night. When she wakes in a dark, blood-soaked lab, Anthem has a jagged scar down her chest . . . and an experimental bionic heart ticking inside her. Anthem soon realizes her new mechanical heart has left her with a strange and terrifying strength. A strength that she's going to need if she has any chance of rescuing Gavin and mending the scattered pieces of her broken heart.

The Brokenhearted (The Brokenhearted #1)
By Leeanna Chetsko
I wanted to like THE BROKENHEARTED so much more than I did. Any book with ballerinas catches my attention. Add in a bionic heart, superheroes and villains, and I should have loved this.

But I didn’t.

Anthem is a girl from the good -- aka wealthy -- side of town. As the replacement daughter for her parents (the first drowned), she’s always done exactly what they wanted. Her dream is to be a ballerina, and she’s spent all of her life working towards that goal. She even has the most popular boy in school as her boyfriend. So, life should be perfect for Anthem. It can’t get any better in Bedlam City.

But when Anthem and her best friend sneak into a party in a bad area of town, she’s attracted to a South Side boy. A boy who makes her feel like her boyfriend doesn’t. A boy who she falls in lust/love with immediately. Within pages, Anthem’s slumming it, skipping ballet and lying to her parents to spend the afternoons with Gavin. I can understand Anthem being excited about someone so different from everyone she knows, but what I can’t get behind is Anthem falling in love so quickly, and being so devastated when something happens to Gavin. That relationship is an integral part of the book, since it pushes Anthem into a quest for vengeance, but I just didn’t buy it.

THE BROKENHEARTED also had zero worldbuilding. I have no idea if it’s set in the past, present, or future. I don’t know much about Bedlam City, other than I swear it’s Gotham City. As mentioned in the summary, Anthem dies, and her human heart is replaced with an experimental one by an illegal doctor. Other than giving her superpowers, her heart is barely mentioned, and I couldn’t believe dying didn’t have a bigger impact on Anthem. The pacing is off, too, and I really just wanted to skim to get to the end to see if things would improve. Unfortunately, the ending leaves things open for another book, and after doing some digging, I believe THE BROKENHEARTED is the first in a series.

With its premise, THE BROKENHEARTED should have been an amazing book. But for me, the execution was off, and I was left disappointed.

A good super hero-science fiction type book
By Jenea Whittington
I have to admit, the premise and cover for this is what drew me to it. I mean a ballerina with a bionic heart, how could I go wrong. It turned out to be a little different than I was expecting. Anthem is a young girl on her way to be a extraordinary ballerina, but soon finds herself in a whole new world and secrets to protect.

Anthem is from a wealthy family, a ballerina, she was also naive. I understand the need to break loose when she is giving some space, but she was very impulsive and didn't make the best decisions, but being sheltered by her parents didn't help with that. She suffers a tragic accident and dies and when she received her new mechanical heart she changed at least for the better, I did like her more than I did at first. She has new abilities, strength, and speed. The love interest, Gavin was the "bad boy" from the other side. I could see the appeal for Anthem, but not some of the decisions she made when it came to him.

The Brokenhearted has a fantastic premise, but sadly the execution just didn't do it for me. The first half was on the slow side, it does pick up about half way through, but with the issues I was already having, I had a hard time trying to immerse myself in Anthem's world. The relationship between Anthem and Gavin was an issue for me. Anthem didn't know him for very long, well she knew him for about a week and was "in love with him" and gave herself to him just as quickly. The problem other than how quickly she gave her virginity is the that she still had a boyfriend. So, the cheating was an issue for me. I would have really liked to have known how the bionic heart worked and why it made her the way she was, but I didn't get a lot of answers on that front. There was plenty of action in the second half and some hints as to who was behind some of the events that took place and it does set up the story with a big cliffhanger ending for another book. So, I'll guess we'll see.

While the first half didn't work for me, the second half was better and was an just okay read for me. I know there are some mixed reviews for this, but if you are a fan of super hero-science fiction type books, I think you'll enjoy it.

Summary (from Goodreads):

A teenage girl is transformed into a reluctant superhero and must balance her old life with the dark secret of who she has become.

Prima ballerina Anthem Fleet is closely guarded by her parents in their penthouse apartment. But when she meets the handsome Gavin at a party on the wrong side of town, she is immediately drawn into his dangerous world. Then, in a tragic accident, Anthem falls to her death. She awakes in an underground lab, with a bionic heart ticking in her chest. As she navigates her new life, she uncovers the sinister truth behind those she trusted the most, and the chilling secret of her family lineage...and her duty to uphold it.

The Dark Knight meets Cinder in this gripping and cinematic story of heartbreak and revenge. From Alloy Entertainment, this inventive new superhero story is sure to captivate any reader.

What I Liked:

Oh, how I wanted to like this book. I was excited to start it! Gorgeous cover, debut author, Harper title, science fiction genre... it sounded perfect for me! I tagged this novel under "dystopia" as well, but I think futuristic is a better word. This novel had the potential to be awesome, but for me, it fell a bit flat.

Anthem gets into the wrong kind of trouble really quickly in this novel. Right away, we can tell that she doesn't like her life as much as she would like to. She is no longer enamored with her boyfriend. She doesn't like the rich life - she feels disconnected from her parents. Things are perfect on the surface, but below the surface is a sad, lonely girl.

Then Anthem meets Gavin, and everything changes. She falls head over heels in love with him... and drama. Weeks pass, and they continue seeing each other. They get hot and heavy, and that same night, Gavin gets captured. And Anthem? Anthem falls to her death in a freezing cold river, but wakes up, alive.

With a new start and a bionic heart that beats ten beats per second, Anthem has a different purpose with her life. All she wants is revenge. Never mind the upcoming ballet, Giselle, and not getting the prima role. Never mind faking a relationship with her recent ex-boyfriend, who is blackmailing. Never mind losing her best friend. Everything, to Anthem, is about revenge. Kill Rose and her gang.

The story is unique, especially with the bionic heart aspect. I wasn't totally drawn into the plot, or the characters, but the story went by pretty quickly. Or maybe I was reading really quickly. But I wasn't all that impressed by the story.

What I Did Not Like:

I already said this, but I wasn't impressed by the plot or the story or whatever. It seemed kind of boring and superficial, and weird how all of that happened to Anthem. I mean, did that guy (if you read the book, you'll know what I mean) set her up? HOW? The author never explained, at the end, how that guy set up Anthem, and survived everything, and fabricated everything.

And by the way, I totally expected that. I totally expected that one person to come back and screw over everyone. That was sooo predictable. In fact, most of the plot was predictable, once you got past the part about her getting a bionic heart. After the major characters were introduced, then everything seemed easy to follow... and predict.

The characters are kind of blah, as well. I don't really care for Anthem. Her logic is pretty poor. I mean, you go out with a guy for a few weeks, and you're TOTALLY in love with him? He is SOOOO worth all that work? Really? NO. Irrational, illogical... stupid. Her decisions are just STUPID.

Oh, and the romance in general? Weird. There is a love triangle of a sort, but it's not an obvious one, with the two males bot actively trying to win over the female. But I didn't really like the romance. The one guy, I really like, but he seemed more of the friend-type. The other guy was on fire, and then, ice-cold. And the heroine was totally set on one guy, but she liked the other guy as well, even though she knew that the guy she really liked wasn't coming back to her.

Blehh, the romance.

I already said the plot was predictable, but seriously, the climax was anticlimactic, because you know it's coming, and you know what comes after that. And the ending. It's an ending, but it's not. I don't know if there will be more books to follow, but it seems like there should be more to it.

I just don't think this was the most impressive debut, or book, in general. Maybe I'm not being specific enough, but I really just didn't enjoy this book as much as I hoped I might have.

Would I Recommend It:

Not really, no. I'm actually impressed that I finished this one, given all the negative things. It seems heavy on the science fiction, but it really wasn't, which made me sad, because I love science fiction. I think the premise of this book was great, but the execution was not so great. But this could just be me!

Rating:

2 stars. Definitely not one of Harper's best titles, but I suppose I'm glad I got the chance to read this novel!

Karlstadt and the Origins of the Eucharistic Controversy: A Study in the Circulation of Ideas (Oxford Studies in Historical Theology)By

The debate over the Lord's Supper had momentous consequences for the Reformation, causing the division of the evangelical movement, influencing the formation of political alliances, and contributing to cultural differences among the Protestant territories of Germany and Switzerland. Karlstadt and the Origins of the Eucharistic Controversy is the first full-length study of the beginning of that debate. Going beyond the traditional focus on Martin Luther and Ulrich Zwingli, it emphasizes the diversity of the "sacramentarian" challenge to traditional belief in Christ's corporeal presence in the bread and wine of the Eucharist, and it re-evaluates the significance of Luther's colleague, Andreas Bodenstein von Karlstadt, for the debate. Burnett describes Luther's earliest criticisms of the mass and the efforts in Wittenberg to reform liturgical praxis to correspond with his ideas. She then looks at pamphlets written by other reformers to show how Luther's understanding of the sacrament was adapted and modified outside of Wittenberg. Ultimately, Burnett shows how Karlstadt's eucharistic pamphlets introduced into the public debate arguments that would become standard Reformed criticisms of the Lutheran position. The book also demonstrates the influence not only of Erasmus but also of John Wyclif and the Hussites for discussions of the sacrament, highlights the role of the reformers of Basel and Strasbourg for developing the "Zwinglian" understanding of the Lord's Supper, and draws attention to the early eucharistic theology of the Silesians Kaspar Schwenckfeld and Valentin Krautwald. This book will be an indispensable guide for readers seeking to understand the issues surrounding the outbreak of the eucharistic controversy in the sixteenth century.

Review

"This is an extremely important book that re-charts the topography of early Eucharistic debates in the Reformation. Burnett succeeds admirably in placing Karlstadt and the other reformers in their proper historical and theological contexts. Readers will benefit greatly from her skillful treatment of the debates in the pamphlet literature, where issues of print, theology, and polemic are considered alongside the personal relationships of the reformers. A magnificent achievement."
-- Bruce Gordon, author of Calvin

"By focusing on the pivotal figure of Karlstadt and showing the development of his theology in the 1520s, Burnett has succeeded in breaking through the logjam of preconceived theological agenda held by many researchers and in placing the historical and intellectual twists and turns of Eucharistic theology during the early Reformation front and center. In the process she has rehabilitated the central role played by Karlstadt. Moreover, by providing cogent analysis of critical texts she allows the English-speaking reader access to another side in this crucial debate in the history of the Reformation."
-- Timothy J. Wengert, Ministerium of Pennsylvania Professor of the History of Christianity, The Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia

"Amy Burnett has written yet another excellent book: a study of a significant early Reformation figure on a very important topic in the period. Karlstadt has been neglected and sometimes misrepresented--and this study provides a solution to both problems. Burnett deals well with Karlstadt's background and looks carefully into the theology of his contemporaries, going beyond merely the obvious comparison with Luther. In addition, her study is so carefully textual and so balanced in its analysis that scholars working in Luther and Melanchthon will find analysis of these thinkers sound and insightful as well."
-- Richard A. Muller, P. J. Zondervan Professor of Historical Theology, Calvin Theological Seminary

"Burnett's book breaks important ground for the historian and theologian alike. Like a good work of scholarship, it also hints at new areas of creative inquiry. As a landmark study, it will be of use for students of religious history and theology for many years to come."--The Catholic Historical Review

"Throughout her book, Burnett makes good on her subtitle, pursuing the circulation and impact of Karlstadt's ideas upon other reformers...an excellent initial study for her long-term project to assess 'the eucharistic controversy from its beginning through the signing of the Consensus Tigurinus in 1549.'"--Lutheran Quarterly

"This book is an 'absolutely-must have' in graduate classes and continuing education on this topic."--Journal of Ecumenical Studies

Helpful Connections
By Amy C. Little
Dr. Burnett's book on Karlstadt and his contribution to the Eucharistic Controversy of the early Protestant Reformation helps the reader to make significant connections to the evolution and definition of the various eucharistic theologies. She helps the reader to see how the circulation of pamphlets in the 1520's shaped the theologies of the growing protestant movement and how the disagreements between Luther, Karlstadt, Zwingli and others took form. There is not a wealth of information about Karlstadt, who was a colleague of Luther's at Wittenberg, so this volume fills many gaps for those who are interested in him. Not sure why it costs so much though!

About the Author
DR. CLAIRE WEEKES (1903-1990), renowned Australian pioneer in panic disorders has helped millions of people recover from anxiety, panic, and phobic disorders. She is widely acclaimed for her revolutionary approach and has achieved distinction as the first woman Doctor of Science at the University of Sydney, and was recognized by Queen Elizabeth II for her contributions to medicine.

From AudioFile
PASS THROUGH PANIC is a compilation of eight radio lectures copyrighted in 1967 by the late Australian panic expert Claire Weekes. Her main points are valid enough--that fear and anxiety can be exaggerated reactions to stress and that a lot of emotional and physical illness is due to ignorance about people's normal stress responses. But the author's delivery has an authoritarian tone, and the content obviously doesn't benefit from the psychiatric and psychological advances that have been made in the past thirty years. The program is an artifact of self-help radio lore, but not a good resource for patients with panic or anxiety. T.W. AudioFile 2001, Portland, Maine-- Copyright AudioFile, Portland, Maine

Highly recommend!
By K.T.T.mom
I have suffered moderate to severe anxiety and panic disorders for 25 years and anxiety runs in my family. I have tried everything (psychotherapy, medication (I can't tolerate), Joe Barry's Panic Away, Lucinda Bassit's Attacking Anxiety and Depression, naturopathy, vitamins, etc.) I wish I had found this CD years ago. While I believe that biochemical and lifestyle interventions such as vitamins, fish oil, exercise, religious practices, etc. have been crucial to my healing, I know that this CD has been able to handle all the built us mental struggle that I have had (fear of the fear) from these many years of anxiety. I have since bought two of her books, but I must say, this CD is the best treatment to panic attacks that I've ever used. I consider myself "practicing" healed (she explains this on the CD). This CD is so superior to her books that I recommend it as a MUST. If you can only afford either the CD or the books, please get the CD. Her voice is amazing--several times a day I now "hear" her voice in my head advising me, calming me and encouraging me to go on. I haven't had a panic attack since ordering and listening to this CD and now I KNOW I can deal with one if I got one--essentially I'm getting over the highly sensitized state (as she calls it) and getting over the "fear of the fear" and am now able to do things with significantly less anxiety and fear than before this CD. I'm still "practicing" and believe that may be for the rest of my lifetime, but I am very different. I have a new set of skills to get over these fears. I have a different confidence and am excited to try things that made me nervous before because I now have the skill to deal with any ensuing panic. I did not believe this CD would alter my life so thoroughly for the better. It has been about 2 months since I bought the CD and things have only improved weekly. I'm not even nervous about the panic coming back (if it does) because she teaches techniques for dealing with that too. She removes the fear of fear from the listener!

Her basic theory is that you must change your thoughts about how you perceive everything that makes you nervous/panicky. I know that anxiety sufferers have heard that before--but her system is different. It is similar from Joe Barry's method, but his method continued to have you "fight" the fear. There is no fighting the fear with this program. I can do it no justice myself, but she basicly gives you the ability to transform your thinking about panic: be more accepting of yourself (think of it as "practicing" instead of "doing"; letting things "wash over you and accepting them" instead of fighting the fear/panic. And, essentially these less hightened reactions to fearful activities will "desentize" your already "sensitized" system.

Please, if you have suffered panic or agoraphobia or fear, please please don't hesitate to try this CD. It is not a wacky new age thing--it has sound principles that really work. As I stated earlier, I only wish I had found this sooner.

These CDs saved me
By Karen J
I had anxiety for 5 years. It just kept getting worse and worse. I found these CDs along with Dr. Weekes book "Hope and Help for Your Nerves". Best thing I ever did. I tried several different anxiety meds, different diets, meditation, counseling, exercise, all in an effort to get rid of the anxiety. Dr. Weekes information was the ticket to help me. She explains in very plain language how the adrenal glands can be triggered by stress of some sort and kick into overdrive and begin misfiring when it's really not needed. She also explains exactly how anxiety has a very specific pattern it follows in the body, and then she goes through some information on how we can change our response to the anxiety and eventually it gets less and less then goes away. It's now been about 1.5 years since I first read her book, and I can definitively say I am anxiety free except for the few occasions when I am overtired. But when I catch back up on my sleep, it goes away. I could not have beat the anxiety without Dr. Weekes information. I listened to the CDs over and over, until I had them memorized, then when I felt the anxiety coming on, I would hear her voice in my head, describing what I was feeling, and what I needed to do about it. It was a slow process, like I said 1.5 years, but it was well worth it. I do think it would have gone quicker if I hadn't also been dealing with weaning myself off anxiety meds over the last year.

I recommend this for anyone dealing with panic attacks
By Jef Jaeger
I recommend this for anyone dealing with panic attacks, anxiety, or agoraphobia. I like Lucinda Bassett quite a bit, but Claire has a much different style that some like better. I listened to both women because I wanted to learn everything I possibly could about anxiety disorders - and a few years later, I am quite a bit better (I had panic attacks and general anxiety). I had a bit of an adjustment period getting used to Claire because of her strong Australian accent, but I found her to be positive and comforting in no time at all.
