The most underadvertised CD ever!

Curious as to what the differences are between the standard edition of the study guide (which sells for much less) and the "Deluxe" edition, it turns out the most significant difference is in the media. For some reason, the publisher isn't going out of their way to make it readily apparent, but the Deluxe/hardbound edition has a CD which includes a slew of items not in the standard edition. Among them: almost an hour of video on security topics, a "simulation engine" that lets you test your knowledge with something other than multiple choice, more bonus tests and a whole lot of PDFs - lab exercises, cabling info, etc. There is so much value in the CD alone, that it would be nice to see it packaged and sold separate or at least advertised as being the differentiator between the two books.

Passed first time

After taking the A+ and Network+ exams, I knew what to expect from CompTIA. I found the text great and passed the exam on the first attempt with an 810; however, the practice questions were not nearly as extensive as some of questions on the actual exam. I used other study materials for the this test and found these to more closely match the exam. I would suggest buying the Standard edition, saving $15, and then using another form of study material for practice questions. I'm not entirely sure why the Sybex questions were so easy in this book when the Network+ questions were very close to the actual exam. But if you only study this book and its questions you will not likely pass the exam, simply because you will not expect many of the questions, some of which are not even covered in this text.

Again, it's a fine book for a novice, but the questions are far too easy to adequately prepare a person for the exam, I was getting 85% on the first try. Go to CompTIA.org and take their 30 question practice test for an idea of the difficulty of the exam, for comparison I got a 55% on this test in the first attempt.

Don't use this alone to prepare!

Here is my review on this book. It's not the prettiest most organized and researched one, but here it is!

Passed security+ today, but barrrrrrrrrely. I really did get LUCKY with that test. When I took the test, I was not familiar with a good bit of material. I read the book from front to back doing the exercise questions to scouring the entire CD included. This book was well written but it could of easily been expanded on certain subjects that require a more thorough understanding of so when it comes test time you don't hesitate. I would recommend additional supplements for taking this test. I took a class a year ago, read some other security+ prep books, have looked up security applications for this stuff on web and fiddled around with, and apply these kind of concepts in the real world at my job in general IT (nothing too advanced). Heed my warning or you will be out of $270 and staring at a FAILED screen with some papers in hand that tell you what objectives you need to touch up on for next go-around!

Plus: Easy to Understand, engaging writing, wide array of comptia objectives covered, some hands-on experience labs included in cd with videos, practice tests to harden understanding.

Negative: Brief detail of important topics such as LDAP, TACACS+, RADIUS, various hashing and encryption standards, blue snarfing/blue jacking, calculating MeanTimeBetweenFailure(something like that) and figuring out recovery time by dividing some value(all of this stuff I recall from memory I was asked multiple times on the test and freaked!!!!!!!) ,not enough hands-on examples like other book's include like mini-projects with key loggers, sniffers, etc ( the fun stuff).

quick ending rant: My biggest gripe about Sybex books is the hands-on applications. I think it should be standardized in each book with projects and labs instead of having to have some kind of deluxe edition. Hands-on experience differentiates yourself from a "paper cert." Real world experience cannot be stressed enough. Please invest your time into this stuff to test your understanding!!!!!

Making the Printed Word Legible and Readable

Let's say you have read a popular volume like the delightful _Just My Type: A Book About Fonts_ by Simon Garfield, and you have a new awareness of how important typefaces are. You didn't used to pay attention to fonts, but you'd like to know some practical information about how to use type, and how to avoid basic mistakes. If you have realized that type matters, you will do well to get the primer _Type Matters!: Simple Tips for Everyday Typography_ (Merrell Publishers) by Jim Williams. It is a handsome volume, with flexible covers, two ribbon page markers, and an elastic loop in the back so that you can hold the end pages close to the back cover. Williams was asked by a design company in Manchester, England, to give a series of talks to help its designers with day-to-day typography, a presentation that was later printed up, was popular, and is now bound as this fine-looking book. It is obvious that every page has been carefully laid out, usually with examples (good and bad) of type at work in black, and comments or instruction in red. The pages are thick and their color creamy. The fonts are labeled, but this is not a book of font specimens, although there are plenty. It is, rather, a broader view of what makes a page communicate well and what makes it look good.

_Type Matters!_ is well organized. The first part, "Background," gives a three-page history of type design, and gives some basic terminology. You may have been told to pay attention to every jot and tittle, and while jot can mean the tiniest part of writing or the least detail, a tittle in typography is specific: it is the dot above the i or j. Here is also a bright explanation of why some type faces of the same point size (basically the maximum vertical dimension of letters in a font) look bigger, although they are not. The second part is "Setting headlines and display type." There is a hilarious example of two contrasting letterheads, one for a financial advisor, and one for Rocco the Clown. They are both set in Copperplate Gothic BT and then in Jabberwub. I don't have to tell you anything but the names of the typefaces. The shapes of the letters should not imply that you would be amused by your financial advisor, nor that you would take your clown seriously. By far the longest part of the book is the third part, "Text setting," the basics for the regular readable page (rather than headings or display types). There are loads of examples here, including a particular peeve of mine, white letters on black background; this is often bad on the page and worse on a web page, but it happens all the time. Williams shows how typefaces that are nicely legible black-on-white despite (or due to) thin strokes and fine serifs can require active concentration to read when they are white-on-black. There's nothing wrong with a little white-on-black, and an example he shows using the sans serif, uniform stroke News Gothic Demi BT, is fully legible. You can learn here the considerations required in using raised or dropped capital letters in beginning paragraphs, the difference between capitals and small capitals, the use of dashes (the shorter nut dash and the longer mutton dash), different ways of indicating paragraphs, and much more.

There are two pages on those desiderata, legibility and readability. They are not the same thing. Legibility is "the clarity of individual characters and how easily they are deciphered." Readability is "the level of comprehension and visual comfort when reading typeset material." There are many examples here of both, emphasizing the great lesson that the type and its arrangement do their best work when they are quiet and do not present the reader with any distraction from the ideas in the words they form. Good type and arrangement, on the page and on the computer screen, help encourage the reader to continue reading, or at least do not discourage continuation. This book is an excellent introductory volume from which I learned a lot; those who want to learn more will do well to study its helpful bibliography and its directory of museums and other organizations that are dedicated to good typography. These may be simple tips, but they could change the way the world reads the writing you want to present.

it's ok like that - each page have a 'rule' and examples of text set to or against the rule
* it would be bad if you only read it digitally - the hard copy is pleasant to hold and flip through
* it's more of a nice object - that will be nice to pick up now and again
* looks cool on your desk
* i'm happy that i've got it - but once again - it's main that it's a nice object more then a text book on the subject.

Well I've never been very religious but I think I found my Bible. Wonderfully layed out with awesome examples and all the technical jargon you can handle, while still being an easy read. Can't seem to put it down and love the bookmarks. I am a young designer but will use this book the rest of my life, it's just that good.

Jason Reynolds is crazy. About stories. After earning a BA in English from The University of Maryland, College Park, he moved to Brooklyn, New York, where you can often find him walking the four blocks from the train to his apartment talking to himself. Well, not really talking to himself, but just repeating character names and plot lines he thought of on the train, over and over again, because he’s afraid he’ll forget it all before he gets home. Jason Reynolds and Brendan Kiely's ALL AMERICAN BOYS is sure to change the way you see yourself and others

The quote above which I discovered for the first time in reading this book says so much about the community responsibility we all have towards one another. I have read literally over a hundred books this year, and I can honestly say that very few have impacted me afterwards the way that ALL AMERICAN BOYS has. Even though I am a 40 year old man of color living in Mississippi I have not experienced the blatant racism and discrimination that others have, but a book like this shows that you don't have to have experienced the events personally to be impacted and changed by them.

What authors Jason Reynolds and Brendan Kiely have done is take what is a storyline that has become all too familiar and showed through fiction that things don't change until we do. Through the characters Rashad and Quinn we are able to see how quickly life can change and how people take sides not necessarily based on truth but the connection we feel with one person over another.

Does discrimination and profiling exist? Yes. Does it make all people who look like the guilty or accused bad? No. And those two questions are great reminders as we go through life. In one night both Rashad and Quinn's lives were changed, but it was up to them how they allowed the events to shape them moving forward. Told in their respective voices, ALL AMERICAN BOYS highlights the need to get to know those around us, to understand what others are experiencing and to speak out when others feel they have no voice.

Deeply moving and sure to leave a imprint on your soul, this book and the story it tells is not one you will be able to easily let go.

Important and Powerful Book

I have only read one novel written by Jason Reynolds but I have read nothing by Brendan Kiely. Both authors have created an important and powerful novel. All American Boys is about two high school teens who attend the same school. Rashad Butler is African American and Quinn Collins is Caucasian. One day Rashad goes to a convenience story to buy a bag of chips and is soon accused of shoplifting. A police officer ends up beating up Rashad so badly, Rashad is sent to the hospital. During this whole ordeal, Quinn is a witness. However, Quinn is conflicted. Although, the police officer is someone Quinn sees as family and a role model, the actions the police officer took against Rashad is wrong. Will Quinn march in the protest or will he side with the police offer?

Police brutality isn't a hot topic in most books these days. Yes, police brutality may be seen in a lot of books around the civil rights movement but this novel is about modern day. We think racism is over but it still exists everyday. All American Boys handles race where people are conflicted and don't know who they should side with. Some people speak up against the injustice and others assume that the police officer is just doing his job and Rashad is the troublemaker. We are living in a progressive age but how much have we learned from history? This cultural and racial divide needs to end. Are we still fighting for basic rights? Aren't we all of the same race? We all belong to the human race.

The novel is told in dual narrative from Rashad and Quinn's POVs. That ending! I loved the last chapter which is told by both Rashad and Quinn. Although Rashad has no clue who Quinn is, Quinn is conflicted through the whole novel about what he should do about what he saw that day at the convenience store. By the end of the novel, readers will find out what Quinn decides. The narratives are compelling and it's interesting to read from a victim's POV and a witness's POV of the attack.

I highly recommend this book to be read in high schools and I will be recommending this novel to my students. It's an important novel that everyone should read at least once in their lifetime

Contemporary story that follows a young black man who experiences police violence and the young white man who witnesses it. Explores community and family along the way. Strong plot. Good midpoint twist. Neither sentimental nor preachy. It ends in exactly the right place. A well executed story. The partnership between a black and white writer adds authenticity to voice.

Great for NASCAR fans!

I've bought a similar guide since 1993 from UMI Publications. Unfortunately they were discontinued a few years ago. My son and I were very happy that this is available again. It is a great publication containing not only current information but a lot of historical statistics on drivers and tracks. I hope this Guide continues to be published but I have not been able to find the 2014 version.

NASCAR still knows how to present its series

I was an avid follower of the Preview and Press Guide for years until it was discontinued in 2010. I truly missed it as it is great to have all the stats about the drivers and racetracks right at your fingertips. I also keep track of who wins the current year races and where my favorite driver finishes and is in the points standing in the book. I am one of those people who does not like to run to a computer or I-phone to look something up. I want my info in my hands, safe for any future references I may want to make. This guide has everything a true NASCAR fan could want - facts about all the drivers and champions in all the NASCAR sanctioned series, all track info and how to get tickets, a past win list. as well as finishing orders for all of last year's races in Sprint Cup and owner standings at the end of last season, list of most popular driver winners over the years, and much more. I hope they never discontinue it again!

I have spent years reading and listening to positive, inspirational and motivational books and tapes in attempt to make me the best that I can be. I had always wished that I knew way back when, what I know now. Finally, a book for children that gives them the edge for becoming the best that they can be. My grandson was fascinated with this book from day one (which is when I first read it to him). Now, three years, and two copies later, it is still his favorite book. If you desire to give your child a head start on a positive and ultimately successful life, this book is a must!

Dr. Stuart Hoffman is a Chiropractor specializing in children's care. Together, they have created a series of books and Audio CDs. There is also a plush toy - the Lovable Me Bug.

The art in this book is delightful and the little bug is quite lovable. This affirmation book will help children to understand the need for positive internal dialogue.
